Photo Credit: Amira FritzIn anticipation of the October 28th release of Honeyblood's Babes Never Die, the Scottish duo have released the Thomas James (Black Dog Films) directed video for the single "Sea Hearts" which SPIN premiered today, calling it "a creepy visual that lives up to the song's thrills." The band is set to kick off their US run of dates next week with Jay Som and Hazel English with stops in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles and more October 24 - November 7. Full list of tour dates below. Frontwoman Stina Tweeddale and drummer Cat Myers recorded their third LP in the winter of 2016 with acclaimed producer James Dring (Jamie T, Gorillaz). After the initial blast of punk rock bands made their impression on the youth of the late 1970s, subgenres quickly emerged. Some preferred the faster, louder aggression of hardcore, others the angular danceability of post-punk, some the raw and more personal home-made sound of DIY, and so on. Looking back among and between these genres we now recognize various blends of punk, post-punk, goth rock, industrial, and DIY as “ deathrock." In 2014, Sacred Bones Records launched the series Killed By Deathrock to document an entire scene of bands that haven't yet received proper recognition.
The thread that holds these groups together as deathrock bands comes down to their willingness and sometimes compulsion to reveal and explore the darker side of their psyches. Night-soaked dirges of fatality, despair, and horror were rampant, rooted in that sublimity that is found on the edge of the horror genre, as famously developed by Edgar Allan Poe — an edge that relished in misery and openly recognized the inevitable end of any human life.
Today the label is sharing an offering to the compiation from ADS - a group from the early '80s Denmark punk scene, with their searing track "Waiting for the War," (stream it here) from their scarce 1982 split 7" with City-X, which takes the socially conscious yet satirical bite of punk rock one nihilistic step further.

About Killed By Deathrock Vol. 2:
Gatecrashers' (a band from the same scene as ADS) maniacal, keyboard-driven anthem "Spectator" kicks off the compilation, its the first track from the Denmark group's 1980 7" EP Desillusioned. Then there is Middle Class a band which began by releasing what many consider to be the first-ever hardcore punk record: their 1978 debut EP Out of Vogue . Bassist Mike Patton would produce seminal California punk bands like Adolescents and Minutemen, among others. By 1984, Middle Class had evolved from their fast-blast origins to a darker, more plodding style, represented here by their track "A Skeleton At The Feast," from the 1982 LP Homeland . ADS, a group from the same Denmark scene as Gatecrashers, offers up the searing "Waiting for the War," from their scarce 1982 split 7" with City-X, which takes the socially conscious yet satirical bite of punk rock one nihilistic step further.
A swirling nightmare of reverb-drenched guitars begins UK darkwave act Veda's snarling "Whiplash," featuring Sex Gang Children member Cam Campbell. The 1987 single it comes from was Veda's one and only release. Fellow British band Skeletal Family began a prolific career in 1983. Their track "Promised Land" is a perfect showcase for guitarist Stan Greenwood's jagged style, as well as Ann Marie Hurst's powerful vocal ability. UK goth rock band Flowers for Agatha's somber "The Freedom Curse" was more than worthy of radio airplay, which sadly went unachieved. The song appeared on the band's 1985 EP of the same name.
"Dark Spirits" is a standout cut from Los Angeles deathrockers Red Temple Spirits, released by the legendary Midwestern label Fundamental. Independent Project Records later released a comprehensive anthology of the group's material in 2013. The driving post-punk obscurity that is "What's Wrong Yvette," by the nearly unknown Denver band Crank Call Love Affair, comes from their only record, a self-released 7" single of the same name.
Belgium's Red Zebra– now known as EX-RZ – contributes their raw, infectious brand of new wave in the form of the title track from their 1980 debut 7" EP "I Can't Live In A Living Room." Fellow Belgians Vita Noctis round out the compilation with their dreamy, recorded-to-cassette ballad "Hade," from their 1984 self-released tape In The Face Of ...Deaths

He was the founder and vocalist of influential proto-punk band The Stooges, who reunited in 2003, and in 2010 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Pop's music has encompassed a number of styles over the course of his career, from garage and punk rock to forays into jazz and blues. Pop's best known songs include "Lust for Life", "The Passenger", "Real Wild Child (Wild One)", "China Girl", "Nightclubbing", and the Stooges classics "Search and Destroy" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog". In March 2016, Pop released his highest charting album ever, Post Pop Depression, a collaboration with Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal).

A four-time Grammy nominated Art Director, he won the 1990 Best Album Package Grammy for Suzanne Vega's Days of Open Hand. Gold has consulted for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Experience Music Project, and appeared as an expert on PBS' History Detectives. Gold and colleague Laura Woolley also appraised The Bob Dylan Archive now housed at the University of Tulsa. His discovery of previously undocumented tapes has led to major label releases including Bob Dylan in Concert at Brandeis University 1963. Gold's 2012 book 101 Essential Rock Records: The Golden Age of Vinyl, From The Beatles to the Sex Pistols was one of eight books chosen by Rolling Stone as "the year's best reading material." Gold owns music collectibles website Recordmecca and writes about topics of interest to collectors on its blog.

The Smart Studios Story is a whirlwind tour of a busy if largely subterranean epoch whose long, often fleetingly glimpsed talent roster should pique the curiosity of alt-rock archaeologists. A release of the full tracks would probably require three or four discs — and there would be precious little dross in the lot. - Variety
The Smart Studios Story will host two LA screenings this Saturday and Sunday as part of the indie documentary’s pre-release screening tour. The powerful yet unpretentious feature traces the roots and rise of independent music in America to an early recording hub of the Midwest underground music scene, Smart Studios – the legendary recording facility founded by Butch Vig and Steve Marker that became a pillar of the alternative rock sound globally.

The fall screening tour is precursor to the November 25th Record Store Day Black Friday release of the DVD and American Noise Volume 1 – a vinyl compilation of early era tracks recorded at Smart Studios between 1983 and 1990. Each vinyl release will include artists featured in the film representing some of the earliest work of Butch Vig with seminal artists Killdozer, Tar Babies, and Die Kreuzen. The limited run is a companion to the documentary and includes numerous songs featured in the film.

Maria co-produced In The Next Life alongside Nik Freitas (Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band), which features guest vocals from Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Joshua Radin, Macey Taylor (Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Jenny Lewis, AA Bondy), Jake Bellows (Neva Dinova), Louis Schefano (Remy Zero, Suspicious Light), Morgan Nagler (Whispertown), and Tiffany Osborn.
After putting out four full-length albums and two EPs as one half of Azure Ray (with co-vocalist Orenda Fink) and lending her voice, piano and drumming skills on numerous Bright Eyes records, Maria announced her solo career in 2005 - a change that would pave the way for five critically acclaimed albums and collaborations with renowned artists such as Jim Eno (Spoon), Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), Moby, Doug Easley(Cat Power, Pavement), David Barbe (Sugar, Drive-By Truckers, Son Volt) and Crooked Fingers. As a performer, Maria has shared the stage with Ben Lee, Josh Rouse, Joshua Radin, Jason Isbell, Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and more. Over the years, fans have heard her music on TV shows such as Unforgettable, Suburgatory, Private Practice, Bones, Grey's Anatomy, Greek and One Tree Hill.

SAD VACATION is the latest documentary film by Danny Garcia ("The Rise and Fall of The Clash"/"Looking for Johnny"), which explores Sid and Nancy's fateful trip to New York in 1978. It is a film that is dedicated to presenting the real facts; told as it happened by their friends and those who witnessed it. A film about the dynamics of Sid and Nancy's tumultuous relationship, and how it all ended in Room 100 of the Chelsea Hotel.
SAD VACATION includes interviews with Roberta Bayley, Steve "Roadent" Conolly, Donna Destri, Kenny "Stinker" Gordon, Bob Gruen, John Holmstrom, Hellin Killer, Walter Lure, Honest John Plain, Howie Pyro, Cynthia Ross, Andy Shernoff, Gaye Black, Casino Steel, Phyllis Stein, Sylvain Sylvain; in addition to the late Leee Black Childers and three key residents of the Chelsea Hotel, Victor Colicchio, "Neon" Leon Matthews, and Ned Van Zandt, who had a lot to say about the events that took place on October 12th 1978. Drawing upon their reflections and a batch of newly-released Grand Jury documents, "Sad Vacation" presents a solid timeline of events for the very first time.
