Can To Release Singles Compilation, UK Performances This Summer

CANANNOUNCE THE SINGLES
LISTEN TO"TURTLES HAVE SHORT LEGS"

THE CAN PROJECT PLAYGLASTONBURY AND BARBICAN EVENT
CAN, Mute and Spoon Records are pleased to announce  CAN – The Singles , a brand new collection of all of the band’s single releases, out on June 16, 2017 on triple vinyl, download, CD and streaming services.

This unique document is the first time CAN’s singles have been presented together and shows the breadth of their influential career, from well loved tracks like “Halleluwah,” “Vitamin C” and “I Want More” to more obscure singles such as “Silent Night” and “Turtles Have Short Legs.”

Listen to “Turtles Have Short Legs,” the rare 1971 7" single release HERE. This was the band’s third single, never appeared on a studio album and was recorded around the time of the Tago Mago sessions with the line up of Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebezeit, Irmin Schmidt and Damo Suzuki.

Saturday April 8th, sees a very special event at the Barbican in London marking CAN’s 50th anniversary year. Irmin Schmidt will conduct the London Symphony Orchestra, presenting the world premiere of an original orchestral work composed by Schmidt and Gregor Schwellenbach, CAN Dialog,  which will include quotations of some of the band’s most well-known pieces. In addition Irmin Schmidt will also conduct the world premiere of the concert version of La Fermosa, Ballett-Suite by Irmin Schmidt.

The second half of the show provides an entirely different experience of CAN material, as realized by The CAN Project, a specially curated supergroup brought together by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore featuring CAN’s first singer Malcolm Mooney, Steve Shelley, Deb Googe, James Sedwards, Pat Thomas, Valentina Magaletti and Tom Relleen.

The CAN Project has just been confirmed for Glastonbury in June this year and will be joined by Irmin Schmidt for that performance.

CAN, founded in 1967 released their debut album Monster Movie (1969) which set them apart from the mainstream, carving out a sound that transcended the boundaries of experimental electronic, jazz and modern classical music. CAN’s influence extends from post-punk musicians such as Joy Division and Primal Scream, through avant-garde composers including Bernhard Lang, to Radiohead.  Schmidt himself began his musical career as a pupil of Stockhausen and Ligeti, and conducted numerous high-profile orchestras in his native Germany and abroad. Hearing the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa in the 60s led to the formation of CAN but Schmidt never lost touch with his avant-garde classical upbringing, and it is to Schmidt that CAN owed much of its musical eclecticism.

In Spring 2018, Faber & Faber are publishing a new book devoted to CAN, All Gates Open. The special edition will come in two volumes: one will be the first complete, authorized biography of the band written by Rob Young and the second, CAN Kiosk by Irmin Schmidt, is a collage of thoughts, visuals and interviews (interviews collated by Max Dax and Robert Defcon).

A Q&A with Rob Young about the forthcoming book will precede the Barbican show this weekend. During an extended interval there will be a screening of CAN’s 1972 live performance at the Cologne Sporthalle.

ABOUT THE RECORD:
A few years ago, while in a tour van somewhere in Idaho, the members of Chastity Belt—Julia Shapiro, Gretchen Grimm, Lydia Lund, and Annie Truscott—opted to pass the time in a relatively unusual fashion: They collectively paid one another compliments, in great and thoughtful detail. This is what we like best about you, this is why we love you.
I think of that image all the time, the four of them opening themselves up like that, by choice. It’s hard to imagine other bands doing the same. But beyond their troublesome social media presence—see: the abundance of weapons-grade duck face, the rolling suitcase art—and beyond the moonlit deadpan of say, “IDC,” lies, at the very least, an honesty and an intimacy and an emotional brilliance that galvanizes everything they do together. Which is a fancy way of saying: They’re funny, but they’re also capable of being vulnerable. “Giant Vagina” and “Pussy Weed Beer,” two highlights from their aptly titled 2013 debut, No Regerts, were immediately preceded by a sublime yet easily overlooked cut named “Happiness.” I saw a younger, still unsettling version of myself all across 2015’s Time to Go Home
This June marks the release of I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone, their third and finest full-length to date. Recorded live in July of 2016, with producer Matthew Simms (Wire) at Jackpot! in Portland, Oregon (birthplace of some of their favorite Elliott Smith records), it’s a dark and uncommonly beautiful set of moody post-punk that finds the Seattle outfit’s feelings in full view, unobscured by humor. There is no irony in its title: Before she had Chastity Belt, and the close relationships that she does now, Shapiro considered herself a career loner. That’s no small gesture. I can make as much sense of this music as I can my 20s: This is a brave and often exhilarating tangle of mixed feelings and haunting melodies that connects dizzying anguish (“This Time of Night”) to shimmering insight (“Different Now”) to gauzy ambiguity (“Stuck,” written and sung by Grimm). It’s a serious record but not a serious departure, defined best, perhaps, by a line that Shapiro shares early on its staggering title track: “I wanna be sincere.”
When asked, their only request was that what you’re reading right now be brief, honest, free of hyperbole, and “v chill.” When pressed for more, Truscott said, “Just say that we love each other. Because we do.”This is who they are, this is why I love them.

Shannon McNally to release BLACK IRISH on June 9 via Compass Records | Hear "Banshee Moan"

SHANNON MCNALLY
TO RELEASE BLACK IRISH ON JUNE 9 VIA COMPASS RECORDS
HAUNTING ANTHEM “BANSHEE MOAN” OUT NOW "She has the voice: bruised, smoky and ornery, right at home where country and soul meet.
She has the melodies and the timing - she’s irresistible.”
Jon Pareles, The New York Times "Only Gram Parsons' term 'Cosmic American Music' begins to touch her mercurial, changeling roots aesthetic ... McNally is a Zen-like, post-Beat song poet”
Thom Jurek, All Music New York, NY (April 4, 2017) – Shannon McNally’s blues-Americana return,  Black Irish  will make you dance, break your heart, and save your soul. The album was recorded in Nashville, but its distinctive sense of place lies 210 miles west, where Memphis meets Mississippi. The primary colors of American music are black and white, and Black Irish displays that hybrid in many shades, mixing country, blues, soul, rock, folk balladry and classic pop.Shannon McNally will release  Black Irish  on June 9 via Compass Records. Pre-order Black Irish at iTunes HERE.

Black Irish is McNally’s most personal project yet, which is saying a lot, given the Americana singer-songwriter’s deep catalog. But it speaks to the power of connection, and the power of music to create it and to reflect it. The kick off track “You Made Me Feel For You”, was written by her producer, Americana icon, Rodney Crowell, and serves as a metaphor for their collaboration - how his particular understanding of her unique gifts pulled out the career-defining album many have been waiting for since she came on the scene.

The initial release from the album is “Banshee Moan”, a track McNally wrote about her experiences in the music industry, experiences common to working women everywhere. “I wrote that a ways back, previous to the rebirth of the women's movement we've seen of late. I’m thrilled to see women truly engaged and pissed off again.” With its haunting melody and McNally’s rich, deep-blue vocals, “Banshee Moan” is no mere protest song; it’s a howl of the collective female spirit, equal parts softness and strength.
Hear / Share “Banshee Moan” Soundcloud | Spotify | iTunes | AppleMusic
The concept for Black Irish began in 2013, as Shannon was going through what she calls “a miserable divorce,” raising her daughter Maeve, and nursing her terminally ill mother Maureen. Her parents had relocated to Holly Springs, Mississippi, and McNally moved in, caring for her mom until her death in 2015.

“I had no vim or vigor in me for a couple of years,” she admits. What saved her was her email relationship with Crowell, who’d been talking about producing her since 2012. “We started this really wonderful thing of just lobbing song titles back and forth. And I just sat at a table and learned about a dozen tunes, my favorite covers, anything to spark a fire in this really dark turn.”

She co-wrote three of the album’s 12 songs – one with producer Crowell, who also penned two more for her; the rest include personal favorites by Stevie Wonder (“I Ain’t Gonna Stand For It”), Robbie Robertson (“It Makes No Difference”), and J.J. Cale (“Low Rider”). The result is an album that stands with the best of classic vocal interpreters like Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris and Maria Muldaur.

When it came time to record, McNally enlisted her friend, Memphis soul-gospel powerhouse Wendy Moten on background vocals, while Crowell called in some of Music City’s finest, including guitarists Colin Linden and Audley Freed, bassists Michael Rhodes and David Santos, and drummer Jerry Roe.

For those familiar with Levon Helm’s ramshackle take on Muddy Waters’ “The Stuff You Got to Watch”, McNally’s smoothly swinging rockabilly/ jump blues will be a revelation. It’s her tribute to Muddy. “I love how classy he was, how sharp-dressed and handsome, with his pompadour and his gold and his perfect suit.”

To McNally, the late Susanna Clark’s song about Townes Van Zandt, “Black Haired Boy” (with Emmylou and Elizabeth Cook singing harmony) is a bookend to “Prayer in Open D”, the two most “singer-songwriter” tracks, both featuring Crowell’s fingerpicking.

McNally and company close Black Irish with the joyous, roof-raising Delta gospel of The Staple Singers’ “Let’s Go Home”.

She won’t be staying long. With  Black Irish , Shannon McNally moves into the next part of her journey.

SUFJAN STEVENS, BRYCE DESSNER, NICO MUHLY AND JAMES MCALISTER JOIN FORCES FOR PLANETARIUM, OUT JUNE 9 ON 4AD

Planetarium , the new collaborative album co-composed by Sufjan StevensBryce DessnerNico Muhly and James McAlister, is set for release June 9 via 4AD. Album track “Saturn,” and its accompanying music video, premiere today—listen and watch  here Planetarium is now available for preorder  here

A completely reimagined version of the project originally undertaken years ago and performed in various iterations around the world,Planetarium unites Stevens’ vocals, McAlister’s beats, Dessner’s guitar performance, and Muhly’s instrumental compositions—part rock odyssey, part electronic experiment, part classical opus.

Conceptually, Planetarium revolves around the cosmic ideas Stevens’ lyrics explore: mythology, astrology, science, astronomy and the intricacies of human consciousness.

The album began when Dutch concert hall Muziekgebouw Eindhoven commissioned Muhly to create a new piece and he enlisted friends Dessner, Stevens and McAlister, all of whom had been looking for the opportunity to collaborate on a larger scale.

After sketching the framework of the song cycle and performing the piece as a band—flanked by a string quartet and seven trombones—in various forms, the quartet put the project on hold for several years. Returning to the raw material in 2016, Stevens and McAlister reversed their typical process, taking recordings of the live show and adapting to the studio. “We had recorded all the arrangements and the live parts in a studio after our last performance,” says Stevens, “so years later when we all kind of settled down, we said, ‘let’s open Pandora’s box.’”

Stevens and McAlister worked to arrange Muhly’s symphonic framework and Dessner’s guitar virtuosity alongside their own lyrics and beats. Stevens became the driver behind the “song” part of the song cycle, his unique voice providing a clear and coherent center of gravity for the whole project.

In the time between Planetarium’s conception and release, Muhly wrote a new viola concerto and a commission for the Metropolitan Opera; Dessner released Trouble Will Find Me with The National, toured extensively and moved to Paris; and Stevens recorded and released Carrie & Lowell and, with McAlister, toured the album worldwide.PLANETARIUM

AT THE DRIVE IN: THIRD SINGLE “HOSTAGE STAMPS” AVAILABLE NOW

AT THE DRIVE INTHIRD SINGLE “HOSTAGE STAMPS” & ACCOMPANYINGVIDEO AVAILABLE NOWin • ter a • li • a OUT MAY 5th ON RISE RECORDS
“a punk-hardcore whirlwind of frantic virtuosity, torrential verbiage and barely sublimated fury…with whipsawing momentum: wild, precise, aggressive and smart.”—NEW YORK TIMES“It was a celebration… to see At the Drive In is to watch Bixler hold court… a true showman”—VULTURE“half-concert, half-religious experience”—AUSTIN360“brilliant… fans roared with delight.”—AUSTIN CHRONICLE“a SXSW phenomenon…we were privileged to see it all unfold.”—HOUSTON PRESS“high-octane punk dominance”—GOTHAMIST“the wait has certainly been worth it… they’re finally back to form, sweating it out on the stage like the… legends they are”—CONSEQUENCE OF SOUNDFresh off a triumphant handful of US dates—including a surprise pop-up performance that was the talk of SXSW and a run of make-up dates including the euphoric sweat drenched NYC frenzy described above, At The Drive In has unleashed “Hostage Stamps,” the third single from the highly anticipated new album in • ter a • li • a, out May 5th on Rise Records. Listen now: iTunes / SpotifyCedric Bixler-Zavala describes the song as “like walking through the hallway in some war-torn ghetto and reading the writing on the wall. When you hear things like, ‘Raise your nithing pole,’ I don’t think anyone will know what that is right away, but when you look it up, it’s this curse. We are going to be victorious. Here’s the fucking head on the stake in front of our army. We’re coming back. It’s reading the writing on the wall. It’s going and keeping your ear to the ground and listening to the heartbeat of young people.”Expanding on that theme, the band has unveiled an ominous new video directed by Rob Shaw and Damon Locks (who also designed the characters and set) to accompany the single’s release. Using a mix of stop-motion as well as digital animation, the video depicts faceless militaristic figures holding a man captive, as billboards bearing ominous messages flash in and out of view. The final scene is an eruption of chaos as the prisoner sets off an explosion.
