'David Bowie is' Coming to the Brooklyn Museum March 2 to July 15, 2018

The Brooklyn Museum is proud to announce that it will be the final stop on the world tour of the critically acclaimed exhibition David Bowie is, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The exhibition is the first retrospective of the extraordinary five-decade career of David Bowie--one of the most pioneering and influential performers of modern times. Curated by Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh from the Department of Theatre and Performance at the V&A, David Bowie is explores the creative process of an artist whose sustained reinventions, innovative collaborations, and bold characterizations revolutionized the way we see music, inspired people to shape their own identities while also challenging social traditions. On view from March 2 to July 15, 2018, David Bowie is will include never-before-seen objects and work exclusive to the Brooklyn Museum presentationAs the official audio partner of the exhibition, Sennheiser will be delivering a captivating audio experience through its AMBEO® 3D audio technology. Also, as in prior David Bowie is exhibitions around the world, the company's technologies will be used for all audio elements throughout the exhibition-- including its wireless systems, headphones and Neumann loudspeakers. The advanced sound technology, alongside theatrical scene-setting, animation and video, provide an immersive journey through the artistic influences that Bowie cited as formative. With unprecedented access to his personal archive, David Bowie is features more than 300 objects collected from his teenage years through his death in 2016--including handwritten lyrics, original costumes, photography, set designs, album artwork, and rare performance material. The Brooklyn presentation is organized by Matthew Yokobosky, Director of Exhibition Design, Brooklyn Museum. The exhibition is made possible with the lead sponsorship of Spotify."Since David Bowie is left the V&A, London in August 2013, nearly 1.8 million visitors have flocked to see the exhibition as it has traveled around the world, a testament to Bowie's depth, breadth and worldwide reach and the public's interest in the processes of creation behind such a uniquely influential performer. Bowie himself left England in 1974 to eventually settle in America, so we could not be more delighted that the final leg of the tour brings the show back to New York, where Bowie made his home," Victoria Broackes, Curator, V&A."With mainstream appeal and yet an avant-garde heart, David Bowie was one of the most original artists of our times. He challenged the status quo and continually took us on new musical explorations with his forward-thinking and groundbreaking presentations. David Bowie continues to be the apex for many artists in wide-ranging disciplines," said Matthew Yokobosky, Director of Exhibition Design, Brooklyn Museum. The exhibition explores the broad range of Bowie's collaborations with artists and designers in the fields of fashion, sound, graphics, theater, art, and film. On display are more than 60 stage costumes including Ziggy Stardust bodysuits (1972) designed by Freddie Burretti, Kansai Yamamoto's flamboyant creations for the Aladdin Sane tour (1973), and the Union Jack coat designed by Bowie and Alexander McQueen for the EART HL I NG album cover (1997). Also on show is photography by Brian Duffy, Terry O'Neill, and Masayoshi Sukita; album sleeve artwork by Guy Peellaert and Edward Bell; cover proofs by Barnbrook for the album The Next Day (2013); visual excerpts from films and live performances including The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and Saturday Night Live (1979); music videos such as Boys Keep Swinging (1979) and Let's Dance (1983); and set designs created for the Diamond Dogs tour (1974).Alongside these are more personal items such as never-before-shown storyboards, handwritten set lists and lyrics as well as some of Bowie's own sketches, musical scores, and diary entries, revealing the evolution of his creative ideas."Music is a cultural force for good and I can think of few better examples than David Bowie as someone who has genuinely made the world a better and more interesting place through his unique talents in music, art and fashion," said Troy Carter, Global Head of Creator Services at Spotify. "We are honored to partner with the Brooklyn Museum on this exhibition to celebrate the life of this great man."David Bowie is a Timed Ticketed Exhibition

David Bowie is offers insight into Bowie's early years and his first steps towards musical success. Tracing the creative aspirations of the young David Robert Jones (born 1947 in Brixton, London), it shows how he was inspired by innovations in art, theatre, music, technology, and youth culture in Britain in the aftermath of World War II. Pursuing a professional career in music and acting, he officially adopted the stage name "David Bowie" in 1965 and went through a series of self-styled changes from Mod to mime artist and folk singeo R&B musician in anticipation of the shifting nature of his later career. On display are early photographs, LPs from his musical heroes such as Little Richard, and Bowie's sketches for stage sets and costumes created for his bands The Kon-rads and The King Bees in the 1960s. This opening section concludes with a focus on Bowie's first major hit Space Oddity (1969) and the introduction of the fictional character Major Tom, who would be revisited by Bowie in both Ashes to Ashes (1980) and Hallo Spaceboy (1995). Inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, the single was released to coincide with the first moon landing and was Bowie's breakthrough moment, granting him critical and commercial success as an established solo artist. The exhibition moves on to examine David Bowie's creative processes from song writing, recording, and producing to designing costumes, stage sets, and album artwork. As he worked within both established art forms and new artistic movements, this section reveals the scope of his inspirations and cultural references from Surrealism, Brechtian theater, and avant-garde mime to West End musicals, German Expressionism, and Japanese Kabuki performance. On view are some of Bowie's own musical instruments, footage, and photography of recording sessions for Outside (1995) andHours... (1999) as well as handwritten lyrics and word collages inspired by William Burroughs' "cut up" method of writing that have never previously been publicly displayed. David Bowie is chronicles his innovative approach to creating albums and touring shows around fictionalized stage personas and narratives. 1972 marked the birth of his most famous creation: Ziggy Stardust, a human manifestation of an alien being. Ziggy's daringly androgynous and otherworldly appearance has had a powerful and continuous influence on pop culture, signaling a challenge to social traditions and inspiring people to shape their own identities. On display is the original multi-colored suit worn for the pivotal performance of Starman on Top of the Pops in July 1972, as well as outfits designed for stage characters Aladdin Sane and The Thin White Duke. Costumes from The 1980 Floor Show (1973), album cover sleeves for The Man Who Sold the World (1970) and Hunky Dory (1971), alongside press cuttings and fan material, highlight Bowie's fluid stylistic transformations and his impact on social mobility and gay liberation.
There is also an area dedicated to the monochrome theatricality of Bowie's Berlin period and the creation of the stylish Thin White Duke persona identified with the r tStation to Station album and Stage tour (1976). It also investigates the series of experimental and pioneering records he produced between 1977 and 1979 while living in Germany, known as the Berlin Trilogy.
Several immersive audio-visual spaces present dramatic projections of some of Bowie's most ambitious music videos including DJ (1979) and The Hearts Filthy Lesson (1995), as well as recently uncovered footage of Bowie performing Jean Genie on Top of the Pops in 1973 and D.A. Pennebaker's film Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture (1973). A separate screening room shows excerpts and props from Bowie's feature films such as The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), Labyrinth (1986) and Basquiat (1996).
The final section celebrates David Bowie as a pioneering performer both on stage and in film, concentrating on key performances throughout his career. This gallery traces the evolution of the lavishly produced Diamond Dogs tour (1974), the design of which was inspired by Fritz Lang's filmMetropolis (1927) and George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). The tour combined exuberant choreography by Toni Basil and a colossal set design, taking the combination of rock music and theater to new heights. On display are previously unseen storyboards and tour footage for the proposed musical that Bowie would eventually transform into the Diamond Dogs album and touring show.
David Bowie is also includes a display of striking performance and fashion photographs taken by photographers including Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Mick Rock, and John Rowlands.

Jane Wiedlin's Elettrodomestico Premieres Zany New Video via BlackBook
ELETTRODOMESTISCO
Featuring Jane Wiedlin and Pietro Straccia
“MAIL ORDER BRIDE”
Music Video Premieres on BlackBook Magazine
"'Mail Order Bride' is flamboyant psych-prog rock – love that retro-groovy organ – complemented by irresistible pop hooks and shimmering harmonies (think Stereolab crossed with The xx…sort of)." - BlackBook Magazine
Elettrodomestico is back at it again, flexing their creative style of vision and foresight with their new video “Mail Order Bride.” Written by the duo Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go’s) and Pietro Straccia, the psych-pop outfit teamed up with director Gareth Goochand and edited by Eddie Rifkind to release a creative and quirky music video that does not disappoint.

The “Mail Order Bride” video has Jane and Pietro portrayed as a married couple while acting out various activities in their living room, resulting in a video reminiscent of an “I Love Lucy” episode. The couple goes from playing sports to a night at the Opera, all while playing with gender roles. The video takes place at the legendary Oasis Nightclub in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco.
You may know the duo from their first song “Rabbit Stew,” which was inspired and influenced by the death of David Bowie back in January of 2016. They met in 2014 in San Francisco, CA. With strong attributes in rebellion and a rock and roll lifestyle, it would only be natural that Jane Wiedlin (the founder of the Go-Go’s) would continue to create music after the all-female band retired from touring 2016.
The real and raw response to their collaboration was the motivation needed to
continue writing and producing. Even though they had no actual band in mind,
they enjoyed the process so much that they continued writing together for the
rest of 2016. By December, the duo wound up with enough material for a full-
length album and decided to start a band together. Because Pietro is Italian, they
came up with the band name Elettrodomestico, which means “appliance” in Italian. This seemed fitting, since the duo use multiple electronic and robotic
sounds on their recordings. While many of the lyrics explore alienation and
despair, the sound of the duo is markedly upbeat, with layered guitars, intricate
harmonies, and four-to- the-floor pop drumbeats. This product came together in a variety of locations, recorded at Lucky Recording and Pietro’s home studio between February 2016 and April 2017.
You can pre-order Elettrodomestico's amazing new record If You’re a Boy or a Girl, via their Bandcamp page.

Third Man announces Vault Pkg. #34: 'The White Stripes Live In Detroit: 1999-2000-2001'
THIRD MAN RECORDS ANNOUNCESVAULT PACKAGE #34:THE WHITE STRIPES LIVE IN DETROIT: 1999-2000-2001

In continued celebration of The White Stripes' 20th anniversary, Third Man Records is proud to announce Vault Package #34 -- The White Stripes Live in Detroit: 1999-2000-2001. Sign-up deadlineis October 31st. A Soundcloud playlist featuring teasers of the package's audio can be found HERE.
July 30th, 1999 found The White Stripes headlining the Magic Bag in fashionable Ferndale, a northern suburb of Detroit. Chosen as a venue mainly to placate the fans who wouldn't venture to see The White Stripes in rough-and-tumble Detroit, the show would be their first performance after the release of their self-titled debut album. The cushy environs of the Magic Bag provided Jack with an in-house piano, making this the first time that he and Meg would ever incorporate the instrument live. Highlights include their first-ever stab at Bob Dylan's "Love Sick," an endearingly unique solo piano rendition of "You've Got Her in Your Pocket," and a simplistic, embryonic rendition of "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground," all of which provide for a tense performance, filled with equal parts rage and tenderness of which only The White Stripes were capable.
August 18th, 2000 had The White Stripes performing at Detroit's venerable Magic Stick. Supported by near-and-dear friends (who'd later become bandmates and collaborators), the Greenhornes and Whirlwind Heat, the recording provides a window into the Stripes' mindset that Summer - just after their West Coast De Stijl headlining tour in June and still yet to experience the insanity of their opening slots for Sleater-Kinney in September. The only known live performance of Captain Beefheart's "Ashtray Heart" (which they'd just recently laid to tape for eventual release in the Sub Pop Singles Club), a rare live outing for the deep cut "I'm Bound to Pack It Up," and an electrifying set-ending "Let's Shake Hands" leave the listener with the palpable sense that something amazing is about to happen for this band.
June 7th, 2001 marked The White Stripes final performance at the Gold Dollar in Detroit. As the first of three hometown headlining shows to support the release of White Blood Cells, the feeling in the air that night was one of excitement and anticipation. In what was arguably the most packed show in Gold Dollar history, Jack and Meg delivered beyond expectations and played their new, soon-to-be critically acclaimed record from front to back. Despite an attempt at tackling Get Behind Me Satan in Chicago in 2005, this would be the ONLY time The White Stripes would perform any of their albums in their entirety. In full command of their powers, The White Stripes proved to be both ascendant and transcendent on this night. This show was the triumphant culmination of the previous five years of gigging in Detroit.
Each LP in this set is pressed on 180-gram vinyl by Third Man Pressing in Detroit and housed in a custom die-cut sleeve that stylistically deconstructs the Stripes' album released the year that corresponds to the live performance. Additionally, high quality reproduction prints of the Jack White-designed posters for each of these shows will be included. Originally limited to no more than two dozen copies printed (Kinko's color copies were a buck a pop back then!), posted up at local Detroit record shops and watering holes and summarily torn down and thrown away, original copies of these highly-sought-after pieces have been known to command hundreds of dollars on the secondary market. The copies included here are gorgeous, instantly frame-worthy and much lighter on the pocketbook than the costly originals.
All of these components are lovingly housed in a sturdy slipcase utilizing the rub-on style lettering employed by Jack on a majority of his early flyer designs.

Sub Pop signs Los Angeles band Moaning for the world, to release debut album in the Spring of 2018
Watch “The Same” (official video)

Supports METZ December 7th-16thSub Pop is pleased to welcome Los Angeles-band Moaning to the label, who will release their debut album in the spring of 2018. Until then, we suggest you watch the group’s video for the track “The Same.”
Stereogum had this to say of the visual: “There’s something innately appealing about watching something get destroyed....Moaning wreck a house in the video for their catchy as hell new song “The Same,” and it’s captivating to see them irreversibly tear things down while they sing about not knowing what’s coming next. Change comes in fits and starts — sometimes it feels like putting a sledgehammer through a wall, but more often than not it feels like nothing is happening at all [watch here].”Moaning have also scheduled tour dates beginning December 7th in Seattle at Neumos and ending December 19th in Phoenix at LBX. During this run, the band will act as support for label mates METZ (December 7th-16th).Dec. 07 - Seattle, WA - Neumo's *

More on Moaning:
Los Angeles-band Moaning is the abrasive post-punk trio comprised of Sean Solomon, Pascal Stevenson, and Andrew MacKelvie. The three initially met as teenagers while growing up in the San Fernando Valley, and immediately developed a kinship through Los Angeles’s local music scene. The three began regularly frequenting DIY institutions like The Smell and Pehrspace, eventually selling out dozens of their shows at both venues with their first few bands.

Announcing Dude York's Halftime for the Holidays, watch video for "Break Up Holiday"
DUDE YORK DROP "BREAK UP HOLIDAY" MUSIC VIDEO, HALFTIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS DUE OUT BLACK FRIDAY
VIDEO: Dude York - "Break Up Holiday" [dir. Sean Downey]
STREAM: Dude York - "Break Up Holiday"
It finally happened: Hardly Art is attempting their hand at the lucrative holiday album racket. More catchy than cynical, however, Dude York's Halftime for the Holidaysdefies any knee-jerk categorization as a mere year-end cash-grab. As evidenced by spunky original "Break Up Holiday"--the new music video for which premiered today on Stereogum--Dude York still have a lot on their minds. Plus, they really like the holidays.
Halftime for the Holidays is so named for its abundance of arena-ready guitar solos and includes seven Dude York originals along with a punked-up rendition of "Silent Night" and "Takin' Care of Christmas" (yup). It will be out on CD and digital/streaming Friday, November 24th and available for pre-order now. Advance review copies are available upon request.
Dude York's US tour with Alex Lahey kicks off November 15th. See below for a full list of upcoming performances.
ABOUT THE RECORD:
The holidays are weird, man. Ostensibly, they’re about family and fun and food and festivities, but more often they portend arguing with your family about politics- and that mental dance you have to do where you’re like “Should I get Trevor a gift even though my funds are dwindling and I’m not even sure if he’s going to get me one in return so this could end up being a whole awkward thing???” The reality of the holidays lies somewhere more liminal, in the space between joy and depression, between excitement and boredom, between “peace on earth and goodwill toward men” and “I think I might murder my entire family.”
So who better to teach us the true reason for the season than Dude York, a band whose music so often seems to exist in an in-between space of their own? Dude York are funny and serious and earnest and deeply ironic all at the same time. The three friends who comprise the band—Peter Richards (guitar, vocals), Claire England (bass, vocals) and Andrew Hall (drums, vocals)—have spent their four years together applying their particular Dude York-ian sensibility to topics like mental health, breakups, and the power of art and friendship. Now they’ve returned with Halftime for the Holidays to pop some chestnuts right on your fire and tackle their most poignant theme yet: THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR.
Halftime for the Holidays is a holiday record for how the holidays actually feel. Tracks like “Takin’ Care of Christmas” (it’s exactly what you think it is) and “Jingle Bells Rock” (it’s not) deliver the requisite tacky cheer. “Greatest Gift is You” and “My Favorite Part (Of This Time of Year)” soar like the greatest pop-punk love songs, with the added benefit of CHRISTMAS. And songs like “Long Distance Christmas” and “Break Up Holiday” testify to the loneliness that they can spring on you without warning. It’s a record that manages to wrap the strangeness of sleeping in your childhood twin bed and the soft wonder of waking up to snow into one delightful white elephant present that you won’t re-gift.
Halftime for the Holidays is self-consciously goofy, but refreshing in its willingness to tackle the misery and joy of the season with equal force. So deck the halls, engage in a regrettable make out session underneath the mistletoe, and rest assured that no matter what kind of reindeer games the universe is playing with you this year, Dude York has you covered.

Please welcome Ought to the Merge family

For Immediate Release: Ought have signed with us, and we couldn’t be happier! After two critically acclaimed albums, 2014’s More Than Any Other Day and 2015’s Sun Coming Down, the Montreal quartet of Tim Darcy, Tim Keen, Matt May, and Ben Stidworthy are slated to release their third album early next year. And let us tell you, it’s a bona fide stunner.
According to the band, here’s how it went down:Band made album and band poked around for label and Merge heard album and offered to front certain standard costs for manufacturing and distribution of said album but also to enter us into their bosom of artist-centered excellence and my what a roster and my what a fine name to have on our new album so band said yes and felt joy, excitement and on that note would love a Merge sticker or four if y’all can hook that up?
Beginning later this week, you can catch Ought playing shows in the southwest around the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and on the east coast with Waxahatchee this November. Plenty more to come in 2018, of course. We suggest bookmarking the band on your preferred digital service and following them on Facebook, Twitter, andInstagram.

Miya Folick (by Maya Fuhr)
LA-based artist Miya Folick has just announced the details of her impending EP Give It To Me, a five-song collection dropping November 3rd on Terrible Records. In conjunction with the announcement she has shared new EP track "Woodstock,"which follows previously released single "Trouble Adjusting." While the previous single effectively captured the bombast of her live shows, her cover ofJoni Mitchell's "Woodstock" is a contemplative exercise in slow-burning crescendo, peaking with a virtuosic vocal catharsis. Miya and her band have added a Los Angeles EP release show at The Moroccan on December 5th, adding to her previously announced show with Mitski at Lincoln Hall on November 7th as part of Red Bull's 30 Days in Chicago series - full details for both dates below.
Give It To Mefollows last year's stand-alone singles "Pet Body" and "God Is a Woman,"which was named "World Record" on Zane Lowe's taste-making Beats 1 show andledto a slot in Rolling Stone's 10 Artists You Need To Know feature last November.LISTEN TO "TROUBLE ADJUSTING" HERE

SELECT PRESS QUOTES ON MIYA FOLICK"Miya Folick isn't a star yet, but on the evidence of the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter's haunting debut EP, Strange Darling, and her spiky just-released single 'Pet Body,' stardom is surely in the cards." - VOGUE"Her gift is capturing the uncertainty, temptation and impulsiveness of brief but fraught junctures, with music that tells as much of the story as her lyrics." - NEW YORK TIMES"Folick is only beginning to explore the reaches of what she could be - and what she's discovering so far is extremely promising." - STEREOGUM

Cults New LP "Offering" out Friday, October 6 via Sinderlyn
CULTS : NEW LP OFFERING OUT OCTOBER 6 VIA SINDERLYN
NORTH AMERICAN TOUR KICKS OFF OCTOBER 14!
This Friday, October 6, Cults will drop a new album, Offering (Sinderlyn). We hope you already have plans to review and if not - we hope you can take a listen today! To date the band has shared 3 singles -- last week's "Right Words," " I Took Your Picture With My Eyes Closed" (a track that Billboard said, "finds the band on a new wave kick that softens the edges from the rock-centric set on 2013's Static") and the LP's title track (which SPIN noted "cuts straight to the heart of what makes a Cults' track great, as singer Madeline Follin offers breathy, reflective vocals").
The NYC-based Cults is Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion and Offering marks the band's first LP since the critically acclaimed 2013 album Static. It also marks the beginning of a more collaborative phase for Cults. The duo have always traded ideas, but for the first time they sat down to jam out ideas together in a room. Follin, who has always written her own parts, came into her own as instrumentalist during the Offering sessions, playing drums and keyboards throughout. Her equal partnership with Oblivion flies in the face of a far-too-common industry assumption that women are passive participants in their own art. Offering also reflects a new confidence in the studio which resulted in the strong, full sound found throughout the album.
Cults will be touring North America with dates starting October 14 in Philadelphia. Highlights include Brooklyn's Music Hall Of Williamsburg on October 17 and theTeragram Ballroom in Los Angeles on November 7. The tour concludes November 19 in Baltimore, MD. Cullen Omori supports from October 14th to November 1st; Curls support from November 3 to November 7; and She-Devils support from November 9 through November 19th. Advance tickets in participating markets come with a download redemption of the album. All dates are listed below and tickets on sale now.
Early Acclaim for Offering:
"The lyrics are pure romance. It also benefits from a dreamy-sounding chorus - perfect for the last of these summer days." Hollywood Life on "I Took Your Picture"
"Follin's polished and bright, tie dyed vocals ripple over a sea of Metric Fantasies-era synth with a spine-bending riff that bring out a new pathos for Cults." KEXP on "I Took Your Picture
"If "I Took Your Picture" is any indication, their upcoming album may continue to feature the hazy-guitar and high-pitched vocals for which they are known." Baeble
" The new single is heavy on the shimmery, synth vibes - piled with layers upon layers of background 8-bit fuzz, with Madeline Folin's pure, ethereal vocals slicing through the static psych atmosphere." The Key WPXN on "Offering"
"A mysterious and dark theme, guided by heavy bass and drum beats and lead singer Madeleine Follin's unmistakably angelic vocals." MXDWN on "Offering"
"Take this one out on a night drive, when the world feels alive. Welcome back, Cults."Revolt TV on "Offering"
"glittery, synth-laden" Consequence of Sound on "Offering"
"An eye-catching move away from what's become the classic Cults sound." Grimy Goods on "Offering"
"If there's one thing Cults know how to do, it's craft an undeniable hit." Austin Town Hall
