15:56:48: Back from San Marcos, where I chatted with a great Honors class about The Speed of Dark. Took winding back roads west from there. Flowers!
15:57:54: Traveling back roads without a map renews the internal GPS. Came out on US281 just about where I thought I would.
17:20:34: Ro-Tel + ranch beef + onions & garlic can't go wrong. Today's concoction assigns barley the "starch" role. Other additions coming soon.

Monday
Today I drove down to San Marcos to talk with a class about The Speed of Dark. Their professor had come to my Book People event and talked to me, then invited me a little later. I hadn't been to that campus since I was in graduate school, when my studying-buddy and I drove there from San Antonio--we were looking at research projects. (Note to anyone thinking of a similar visit to another institution: read the papers of the prof you're going to talk to before you go!! C- and I had an...

Poultry for Politicians
I just stole this phrase from my friend Kris, because we both came up with the "Pay politicians who think this chicken for health care is a great idea in the chickens they claim should be legal tender." And then I thought "Campaign contributions, of course" and why limit it to chickens?
As a way of explaining to politicians like Sue Lowden that barter really doesn't work that well in modern society for ordinary exchange of goods and services (and that most people a) don't have a lot of...

15:23:59: Yesterday and today not the best days ever. Could always be worse. Yesterday dark and drippy, today hot and muggy.
22:16:08: Thunderbumpers headed our way and close enough now to give low rumbles. Tornado watch until 6 am.
23:25:00: The storms have come upon us, cried the Lady of Shalott (well...the scruffy writer of central Texas...) Flash-Boom-Rumble-Rattle-Pour x 20

Chickens for Health Care...
No, I'm not talking about the efficacy of chicken soup.
My rancher friend Ellen sent me this:
.....................................
http://lowdenplan.com/
Sue Louden is a Republican Senate candidate who really proposed barter for medical care, using chickens as an example. Given a chance to amend her proposal to "negotiate" terms, she refused, saying that chickens were good enough for folks in the past and ought to be fine now. Of course, the internet responded. Enjoy.

Another Soup/Stew
Yes, another one. This started as the one just described. We ate about half of it, over two days. Meanwhile, there was the bone and gristly meat in the stock pot in the oven, moved yesterday to the top of the stove to make stock...added the onion, garlic, carrot, celery, bay leaves, peppercorns, etc., etc.--all the usual things for stock, but about half as much. Stock burbled away for hours upon hours upon hours. Today, all the solids removed yielded maybe 1-2 cups of meat, and the...
