Home of the Stupid
I am in the mood to bust some chops. First off there's whoozit over there in Iran claiming that immodest women cause earthquakes. They have an oil industry over there. They have geologists who know perfectly well what causes earthquakes (like, you know, colliding plates that started moving and colliding before there were women. Or men. Or ignorant and vicious religious leaders.) Then there are the idiots in other religions and places who do the bobble-head thing and oh, yes...

80 Acres: Water Garden & pictures

Last year R- cleaned out the round pond section completely, and removed a lot of water iris and goo from the lily pond end. Since building the fence on the east side of the house, we're changing some of the landscaping up there (not shown in any of the pictures in this post. The sound of water c...

10:23:54: Book III is being a perfectly disgusting toad this morning.
10:38:11: Book III, having had a threatening scowl from its writer, decided to leave off playing toad for the moment. Good thing, too.
17:35:22: Copyedited ms. arrived in late afternoon. Some holes in the padded envelop but nothing worse than a couple of bent corners of pages in ms.

Bill Moyers
I've watched Bill Moyers off and on (not every week; my schedule doesn't allow it) on PBS for decades. Tonight was his farewell broadcast, and it was vintage Moyers. Another one of my navigational beacons has turned off. At least he's still alive this night, unlike some of the others. Most of the others.

Painted Buntings
Painted Buntings are a species of concern, as the population and range has dwindled over the past fifty years. Habitat loss and nest predation by brown-headed cowbirds are both implicated.
When we bought the 80 acres, we had one nesting pair on the place (the male's territorial calls make it easy to determine how many pairs you've got and roughly where they are....just listen at the start of nesting season, and you can hear this one here, that one there, etc.) We began cowbird trapping, ...
