09:20:56: White-eyed vireo (by the sound) in back yard who does not want to be seen--only brief glimpses of little gray bird. Lots of calls.
11:28:35: New post up at http://www.paksworld.com/blog/
12:42:36: Pulled chunk of beef from freezer and it tore plastic bag around a frozen wild duck. Both now in oven. Duck with white wine and apple.
12:43:21: Book III now making progress again, hurray!!!
15:36:32: Overcooked the duck. Sigh. Beef not nearly done. No problem, expected it to take...

Duck and Cover (the duck that is)

My plan was to start another beef stew.   I grabbed another lump of frozen beef, and as I pulled it out, it had frozen to the package next to it, and ripped off the protective plastic freezer bag on that lump.  Which was a wild duck.   I hadn't planned to cook the duck until later, after looking up recipes and such, but...when the duck is there, you cook the duck.  Somehow.  Nor did I know how good (or not) the duck would be when I did it, so I still wanted to get the beef started.

The day's p...

13:16:51: New pots suggest reorganizing kitchen storage...o woe, more work! But there's stuff I never use. But I might...so decisions are Fraught.
13:19:03: And I really need to make bread today, so need to Get To It.
16:58:27: Picture of two new pots, one old one: http://e-moon60.livejournal.com/
16:59:21: Son is approved for the apartment we wanted him to get, near campus, on bus route, nice place. YAY!

Two Thirds of the New Cookware

So here's a picture of the old (circa early 1970s) LeCreuset oval pot, with the lid whose handle I didn't like, the new (as of Saturday) LeCreuset round pot, with the lid whose handle is much better, and the new All-Clad frying pan.   The new 8 quart stock pot's picture didn't come out well, due to clutter around and on the stove.  Another time.

I bought the blue one shortly after our marriage, and before all chickens were injected with extra liquid, it would hold a small fryer for...

07:26:40: Monday already? And it's sunny and clear, perfect for photographing wildflowers, but I have to stay inside to take phone calls.
07:27:17: Yesterday was heavily clouded and chilly (at least house was.) Not good day for flower photography.
12:49:38: New pot love: the 8 qt stockpot now has beef, beef stock, onions, garlic, carrots in it and yes, it's MUCH better than the previous.
12:51:07: This will be a sort of stew, eventually, w/potatoes, tomatoes, chilis, etc added to it. Smells...

Pot Number Three

Today's stove-top test of pot number three of the Pot-buying Extravaganza has already proven the 8 quart stockpot a huge success.   I'm glad I didn't go home without it!

What's on is a tough chunk of homegrown beef, in homemade beef stock, with onions, garlic, and carrots (so far) and added dollops of barbecue and Worchestershire sauce.   What's going to be added when the grocery run returns is potatoes, celery, tomatoes & green chilis, and whatever else seems like a good idea.  Mushrooms...

News and Stews

That title's more about rhyming than reality...it's a stretch to make it fit, but I'll try.   We're trying to move our autistic son into the city this summer, so the apartment hunting began, and proceeded to the appointment with the rental office to be checked out for financial responsibility.   That none of us have a regular job became an issue.  That we hadn't yet filed this year's tax return was an issue (hey, it was only the 10th of April..we're not late.)   That our little country bank h...

15:50:56: Williams-Sonoma had ALL the pots I wanted. In the COLOR I wanted (for the LeCreuset ones.) I bought only three. This time.
17:55:11: The LeCreuset pot is red (the shaded red.) The shaded blue, which I also like, I'm not sure would go with my old blue one (plain.)
18:30:17: Native rusty blackhaw viburnum in full bloom now. Sad to see it where construction's poised to destroy it.
