It seems that Alex has no idea of who he is. Himself I mean. And the things he is slowly realizing is a surprise.

The forward in here tells of some utterly amazing things, like a rooster who knew how to use doorknobs to open doors to get into the house! But I am unsure how the rooster could use the doorknob? I know not all doorknobs are round - maybe it was one of those kind shaped like a handle (pencil shaped?)??? I do love these animal stories.

I am really beginning to understand the problems that have been plaguing Starr in this book now but it's even worse as she doesn't have the needed skills to handle the terrain on the reservation. Chenoa, the missing woman, probably has a better chance for survival (if she is alive) than the Marshall coming to find her. This is the climax of the story now. Looks like a whopper.

Finally Starr is doing what she should have done in the first place!! Sometimes I definitely felt like yelling at her...not that it would do any good. But at times it's almost like she has this disability where she zones out. How can she be law enforcement with that going on?? Great story though!

This is turning out to be a very decent cop story set on the reservation..and Starr has a problem that handicaps her too. Lots of people watching going on in here and some crooked stuff too... I will see if I can finish this. I did read it while I was out on my walk today.

This story is beginning to have a nice supernatural twist to it, with Deer Woman being seen by Starr. Lots of things going on in here. But Starr needs to stop that drinking and take the missing people cases seriously!

This is incredibly easy to read and I just got pulled right in from the first page! Songbird has told her story and the Slasher is next. But who is the lordly Rodolphe?? That I think is the biggest question! I believe this will be the most pleasant book to read. It was very popular way back when it was written and published. A best seller in France.

Who ever thought that a beetle (insect) could be worth a lot of money??

If I were a rancher I sure would want to know if there was a volcano on my land!! Personally I think it's idiotic that the ranchers don't care about that. Especially since the thing could go boom and do major damage.

Wow. This explains a lot about human behavior and why Don is doing stuff. Guess you can't trust me who give you emeralds!

Lauren (who is married) is having an affair with her professor Don because her husband has lost all interest in their marriage. So far I am enjoying this but I sense there will be a disaster at the end (but I base that on the book description). Lots of nature descriptions in here! And I have no idea what Lauren should do about her situation with men.

At the moment I am feeling very uncertain about this book. There is so much bizarre stuff in it but it's not funny - it's only just bizarre and makes no sense.

I am determined to finish this excellent story today. And the book has been constantly calling the doctor by the name of Zhang that I had forgotten his name is also Lei. That was a bit confusing.. 😂 Silly me.. this is such a romping adventure story! I am really glad I picked this up at the library. And I have the sequel to read too!! 😁 Exciting times.

This story just gets more mysterious the farther you read! This is definitely going to be a 5 star read!

This story is on a roll! Tons of action + very gory storyline. About the basilisk. The real question is what is the purpose of it all? Of course I may have an idea (since the beginning of the book really). But this is definitely some of the most gory + disturbing stuff I read recently in a book.

"how many times a day do you talk to an AI? You probably don't even think about it. We rely on them for everything."

It sounds like a bad idea to me!! 😕 That old saying of "use it or lose it". Relying on AI makes people more stupid. They can't think.

With my serious reading finished for the moment, I am reading this book for the holiday.. it certainly has the patriotic colors in the title! There already has been a major disaster involving a huge cake so I think this is humor. I will see where it goes. Quite a few characters to keep track of already too.

Horse thieves!! Those redcoats were horse thieves!! 😡

He is now starting his famous ride... On Brown Beauty who was "a very good horse". It says here he never knew what type of horse he would get, their temperament. Because these were borrowed horses. Brown Beauty belonged to Samuel Larkin.

And yes I took this book up + back to the ranch today, was reading it in the car...

This book is much smoother and easier to read than the other nonfiction book I had just finished. In some parts it's almost like reading fiction? I found the parts about him working with the bells & how they were wrung fascinating. Hoping to learn some horse stuff in here. Just learned about a breed called the Narragansett Pacer which is what he rode.

Things are not going well for the main characters at all...

I am not much impressed with this book at all....

OMG!!! I can't believe this! But the horse race in this book takes place twice a year, on August 16 and on July 2. And I started this book today, on July 2!! What are the odds of that? I didn't know this and had never heard of this race before either. It sounds very complicated. It also kind of reminds me of Madi Gras with the neighborhoods getting involved..

Finally!! A historic horse has been remembered and named! And the mare's name was Brown Beauty. You will be surprised how many statues there are in my city of generals sitting on horses and the general is named. But the horse is forgotten. That really bothers me. If the horse is important enough to be in the statue, he or she should be named too. Glad this book remembers the mare!

But WHO fired the cannon?? It doesn't say who fired it! 😮 How can you leave the most important part out?? 😦

It is vividly clear that a huge problem in this book is that people cannot agree. Even the cabinet cannot agree what they should do. Just a few days in office and he already faces a big problem about Fort Sumter.

As an Equestrian I can't help but be curious why this book keeps saying that brown mules are no good and only a lazy bunch of trouble?? Hmmmmm.... 🤔 It repeats this belief throughout the book. I wonder if people actually believed that back during the Civil War time period?

Can you swindle a swindler?? I can see why the word "luck" is in the title... So much of this story depends on luck.

"He probably lives around here somewhere. I suspect he owns a house like this".

Why do I feel like these kids are chasing after a rainbow? They have such big dreams. Of riches and fancy houses. And they have traveled so far too...

After much excitement Haidie is finally getting to see the mountains. And being out west like she is, a wrong decision can cost you your life (as she has seen several times already)... But will she find her father??
