Didn't expect that intro to be part Hitchcock homage and 4 parts large exposition dump.

So far unimpressed with the novel but I will stick with it, but I have no idea if it will pick up later.

Busy busy busy. But I'm getting through it faster than I anticipated in spite of that - and loving every word of it.

If I had to complain about one aspect, it would be how McCarthy does not describe or give much indication to the setting in a new passage. But that's a minor complaint compared to everything else. I'm probably going to B-line through the book soon to just to wrap this up soon.

Alright so how fast I read a book is definitely related to how interested I am in it - I am burning through this book the fastest I have in a while because it is just so captivating.

My only complaint so far is the way he introduces characters so subtly where the names are easy to miss, but other than that this book is essentially a 10/10 so far.

FINALLY, I'm reading a book I enjoy which was adapted from a masterpiece of a film. I went in with tepid expectations, but I blew through that entire first section. The way McCarthy uses sparse prose to immerse you in the action really excites me. Can't wait to read more (and watch the movie again)

Go watch the movie instead. The plot is confusing enough - and there are moments of wry humor - but I just don't care about anything that is going on. The movie knew this and excised most of the plot and focused on the atmosphere (probably better than Chandler). This is his first effort so it's more forgivable.

I was just hoping it would get better; 50% in and I got nothing more than "meh".

Nobody can say that I didn't give this book a chance - I literally got halfway through the book until I decided I have suffered enough. This book tries to mix a dry romantic subplot with a psycho child but doesn't expand on any of that. It's boring with little happening, and not the prose or characterization to justify it. I couldn't have finished this book in a few hours if you even paid me.

Honestly I could finish this book cover to cover in one sitting but I couldn't bear the thought of doing it to a book this strange. Screw completionism, if this book doesn't pick up (which I am being incredibly lenient on), it's the first non comic book DNF from me.

As soon as I was ready to put the book down, the next chapter opens up with a group of children throwing a stray cat against the tree and cutting out its organs, feeling them with their hands, described in explicit detail

What was once boring now feels gratuitously obscene and aimless.

It definitely gets better as it goes along, though not as strong as I anticipated. The story is still hella confusing as Chandler really focused on atmosphere rather than plot - but it's more entertaining for it.

Miss the badass Bogart and Bocal banter and quips, but the novel is good for the witty internal monologue.

Started it after wanting to read something on my own merit and not wanting to flex on others with what I've read.

Loved the movie, but sort of mixed on the book so far. Not to say that it's bad, but the movie has done every scene so far in the book better. (my favorite line ('you're cute') isn't in the book). I can't help but compare it.

Bogart really was the perfect fit for the character.

Welp now I'm a Thor fan. This book was so much darker and violent than I anticipated and it was done in a way that wasn't gratuitous. I can't wait to read the next couple of volumes.

It's considered the best Thor run and I'm ready to experience it for myself.

Welp I'm incredibly close to DNFing it already - creeped out by the beginning, suffered through the purple prose describing every single detail in the middle of this, and there is no plot or likable character coming in anytime soon.

Reading the reviews it sounds wildly different from this point on - so I'll give it one or two more chapters before abandoning it.

Just started this book to get into more classic Japanese literature - and oh boy did it not start out right so far. It's a bit overly verbose and perverted, but things are starting to pick up. Hopefully it gets better.

Trying to redeem myself after taking an embarrassing amount of time to read The Hobbit with a much shorter book - could be read in one sitting (a single hour).

So far it's incredibly light with its theme blatantly pronounced, but its cute and whimsical so far. Wanted to continue but my tired self couldn't bear it.

Alright I finished it (quick thoughts) I definitely enjoyed it, and will gladly kneel to the fact that this book is masterful in every aspect. But I just missed the simpleness of the first half compared to the second half - a wildly unpopular opinion I'm sure. I just wish we got a little bit more characterization (though that's the point) - especially with Thorin (at the end).

I have been being yelled at for taking so long to finish this book - but I will finish it soon I promise!

I feel like I'm running out of steam with this book - I still very much enjoy it, but not nearly as much as I do LOTR (the films at least). Something about it - whether it's me or the book - isn't as captivated with it as the first chapters. It's still a brilliant book - can't wait to see what's next

Have been super busy (and tired) these past few days so I haven't been able to read as much as I want to (has only slightly affected my enjoyment of reading this book).

So far I'm loving just how deceptively simple it is with its story, but expansive with its lore. It's a bit light on characterization, but makes up for it in the way it builds world and divulges into its history.

Yeah...so this book will be in one of my favorites of all time. That is all.

I've been reading nothing but amazing books lately and I'm glad that it's continuing. HOPEFULLY college doesn't get in the way of my reading habits but one can only hope.

I'm trying to spend a lot less time on my phone or any screen after spending a lot of time on it - and this is one of the few books I have a physical copy of (bought it on vacation). So expect a little bit of slowness of updates (hence my lack of a HP review) but I just want to give my eyes a rest.

Anyways, it takes a couple pages to get used to the writing style and dialogue but it's an interesting start.

Also reading in anticipation of the movie, also kind of bored reading it. The villain is kind of cool, but you just have to get through so much backstory they lay upon you that the characters feel more like vehicles for more exposition.

Reading in anticipation of the movie (and apparently, to trigger people) - and it's okay I guess so far? Not for the reasons you'd think; fem Thor is far from a Mary Sue, but like, she's barely in it. The pacing is so awkward, focusing a bit too much on secondary characters and catching up on lore that not much of anything of interest happens so far.

I spent that entire 14 hour flight sleeping and reading Harry Potter. Literally tried to read another book alongside it, but I just got so caught up in this that I went back and continued. Seriously couldn't put it down. Slept and woke up to basically continue (for most of the flight). Most I've read in a single sitting in a while.

Yes I am an American young adult who was born in the 21st century who has not read Harry Potter.

Or seen it.

Shut up.

But I'm only a few chapters in and wow I am impressed already. The way that Rowling quickly introduces you into the world through such a hurrying and frantic viewpoint, and then introduces the characters the way it does is so entertaining. I love the way she writes her prose so far.

If someone told me a few weeks ago before I left on vacation that I would be enjoying this book as I am now, I would think they'd be lying.

It's. Actually. Good. Now.

It's not perfect, even aside from that godawful beginning, but I am actually enjoying it far more than I expected.
