Rereading for I Read YA book club

I don't know why this gives me a Wednesday vibe, but it does. It's not as "dark" as Wednesday and it's a little more fantasy than dark academia, but those vibes are kind of all there. I like the magic but it's a little confusing. I wish I was further and it seems like it's taking a long time for anything to happen even though stuff is happening?

I read this in high school but I don't remember much about it (besides the shadow thing?). I'm hoping to reread it and then read through the rest of the series.
