This mystery seems so lightweight, almost like a cozy rather than the police procedural and legal thrillers I associate with Michael Connelly. It’s well-written and has a strong sense of place, sure, but there’s just no sense of urgency to the investigation.

In the years ahead, through the war, and beyond, it was this quiet day, moving through the unmoving land with boy and girl and the old man and red that I returned to when I needed it most.

I’m enjoying the details of the friendship between Henry and Alex. I hope there is more like this in the novel.

There’s a lot of sexual violence in this book.

I prefer to read about people who are competent in their chosen careers. Stephanie Plum is a big disappointment, at least in his first outing, as she learns the ropes of bounty hunting.
