Chapter 54. Again, I’m just still so struck at how much he’s willing to fuck with his own format for this that he just spent almost 300+ pages establishing. Its so goddamn ballsy.

I think I’m hitting the final acts of this! It’s been fun! Though I wish I had known this was further towards the end of the EDAs before I had started. I would have maybe saved it until after I put my collection in release order (because I’m an insane person).

Baxendale has always been one of my faves but this is allowing him to flex some real horror muscles I didn’t even know he had!

This thing is really starting to cook now. I also think I’m warming up to Trix and Fitz (and finding myself wanting to know more about them). They are like a gen x Ben and Polly I guess? I dunno, that’s all I’ve got atm. This is fun tho!

I totally forgot how amazing all the stupid incel details of Harold’s manifesto were.

I picked this back up. Baxendale does a very fun Eighth Doctor. (Not too sure about his companions this go however. One of them is like a crustpunk who smokes. It’s insane.)

It’s still truly funny to me that the thing that launches the whole weird interstellar war is people starting clubs.

The detail that Nadine never dreamt of Mother Abigail is so fucking good.

Again, like, I still can’t believe how much King fucks with his own format as he keeps expanding out the post-Trips worlds

We get all the Mother Abigail stuff. The start of Fran’s journaling. And then all this insane stuff about how Flagg is working Las Vegas (as well as “evil’s” perspective on Abigail through Trashcan Man; being blinded literally at her piety. It’s so fucking good in a totally diff way)

I had forgotten how much these middle sections drag a bit but King opening up the cast’s backstories and trying new formats (Fran’s diary and the dreams taking on more vivid horror) is still very cool to hear again.

Lol the doctor is such a transmat snob that cheap transmats make him literally puke. I love it.

On the first major Mother Abigail chapters. So happy I can finally clock the Insomnia reference now. But I guess the stuff in Insomnia is really The Stand references but I am way into it either way. I have always loved her basically always saying “all things serve the beam” but this has a lot more texture for me post-Insomnia and I didn’t expect that.

Got this back early from the library. The guy who is reading this, Grover Gardner? He fucking RULES. I hear everything in his voice and cadence now. He’s so good at putting personality into everything but never trying to upstage or improve the prose. It’s very good stuff.

I just listened to a Dollop about the Dona Mora Smog Disaster. This is really plucking at that same kinda weirdness and unease.

This thing has truly kicked off now. Like “Mind Flayer-Esque alien mowing down mobsters and street toughs” sort of kicked off. Hell and yes.

Also fun, when I decided to read tonight, I turned on PlutoTV and “Inferno” was playing AND my pre-order of big finish’s THE ANNIHILATORS came through! A Third Doctor triple shot!

Despite the still occasional and constantly bracing use of A Certain Regressive Word, all this time we spend with Tom and Nick is still incredibly charming and sweet. None of the moments are pointed around Tom and like weird savant moments, but they are genuinely sweet and endearing. Both to Nick and Tom as they manage the new stretch of setting. It’s still good stuff (thankfully)
