It's starting to seem every chapter is "Joe gets his ass kicked, run harder than any of the other recruits, then has a moment of character building along with one or two of his fellow squadmates, repeat. I'm ready for Joe to start kicking alien ash

Is it YA? Is it not YA? Is it Character Sci-Fi? I don't know. It's a really good book, though. I've missed my bus stop 3 times so far because I was too absorbed in it.

Aliens love kicking Joe's ass. They kicked it from earth to space to an alien planet... Joe heals quick, though, he can take it?

Hmmm........ So far this book is fun, and it's going quick so I guess I'll finish. It's a tad predictable though, and somethings don't make a lot of sense.

Hmm... So I'm going in with some idea of the science-fiction concepts of this book, which I was privy to before I began reading... so I think I know where this is going. Doesn't seem to take from its coolness yet, but I sure wish the main character would catch on faster... I mean, he has a background in science, right? Is he really so completely confused? Come on man...

300+ pages of wondering what deity/spirit has possessed murderous 17-yr old girl, and finally her true identity is revealed - and its nobody we've ever heard of yet!! wtf...

Wow there are too many characters/factions to keep track of! But this book is awesome!

Wow this is turning out to be a 4-5 star book for sure. I doubt if there is a bad book about a cadre of warrior mages

Ken spends alot of words describing a fantasy history of politics, but I could use more describing the setting, surroundings... :/

Protagonist spends alot of time describing what COULD explain the things going on around him. He's paranoid.

Okaaay... the main plot has started I think... after the 2 mini-book/backstories have abruptly ended just after piquing my interest. Ok... boring politician with little power, in a first-contact society where assignation is legal and common. Ok lets do this.

Decided to give Cherryh another chance. This one has been on my shelves for a while after the Hammerfall incident in which I traveled, by foot, across the same desert three times. Best to keep it out of mind.

Well that's book 1 down. gonna take a sci-fi break then return to book 2 in the future. Great, amazing story. Very much looking forward to reading the whole quadrilogy :D

Wow this book is great I think I'm a dark fantasy fan now.

Fantastic book so far... vivid and dark. I like it more and more each time I read. But I'm not looking forward to reading the main character's firsthand account of a torture scene, which is sure to be coming up soon...

I should have warmed up with some low-brow fantasy. This wolfe guy is quite the adroit wordsmith. Quite adroit indeed!!

The main character is SERIOUSLY screwing up the human race's natural timeline... I mean, it couldn't get any more screwed up. This guy is possibly the LAST person who should have the power to travel to anywhen in time. Except, of course, Hitler, which the book covers.
