“Can't stay long, Mother," he said. "I'm up front, the prefects have got two compartments to themselves-"
"Oh, are you a prefect, Percy?" said one of the twins, with an air of great surprise. "You should have said something, we had no idea."
"Hang on, I think I remember him saying something about it," said the other twin. "Once-"

The writing excels in suspense but lacks in description and feeling so far

"Holy Hull," Valyn choked, shaking his head. "Holy Hull. We should have stayed in the palace and kept playing with sticks."

Kaden could only nod.

Phirum's head lolled to one side, and Kaden realized with shock that blood was trickling from his lips, pouring down his fleshy chin in a crimson stream.

"Tan!" he shouted. "Something's--"

The words died on his lips as he found Pyrre wiping her blade calmly on the leg of her trousers, then slipping it back into its sheath.

It struck him, as he looked down at the cold corpse, at his own body beside it, that the Kettral wore blacks, not to blend with the darkness, but to be ready, always, for the funeral.

"What thwarts most men is the nagging doubts. What if I I'm seeing it wrong? What if there's something I haven't considered? Maybe I should wait another minute, another hour."

He smiled, a hard predatory smile. "I fight against men like this all the time, and I kill them."

Adare opened her mouth, then shut it, unsure how to respond. Il Tornja said the words the way another man might suggest purchasing more plums.

They told him later that when he emerged from the Hole, the first thing people notice was Ha Lin's body, limp and lifeless, sliced and bleeding, draped in his trembling arms. He was crying, they said, sobbing uncontrollably, his entire body shuddering with the tears. It was his eyes that everyone remembered, eyes that had always been the dark brown of charred wood, but that somehow had burned past char, past ash.

"So we're going down into the cave. We have to fight these things. If they bite us, we end up like him."

"Just a matter of not getting bitten," Yurl said.

Shaleel chuckled. "Oh, they're going to bite you. That's why Fane and the Flea went to all the trouble to haul these two out of Hull's Hole. We make sure they bite you. You're poisoned before you even go into the hole."

INTENSE

Oh dang the Trial by Flame scene is intennssseee. I am really really liking the brothers at this point, but Adare is gonna need some character development before I start liking her. Snap to it, Brian.

"I'm just frightened for you."

Lin considered him for what seemed like a long time. Then, with no warning, she leaned over to press her lips against his. Her kiss was warm, and rough, and soft all at the same time. This... This was something altogether different. Lin pulled away.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that."

"You shouldn't have had to," Valyn replied, baffled. "I should have done it a long time ago."

Rianne dropped her red-rimmed eyes. "We took them here, sometimes," she mumbled. "The men."

Valyn frowned. "Why didn't you just take them home?"

Rianne stopped on the stairs ahead of him, and turned until the lantern was shining directly into his eyes. He could smell her cheap perfume, and underneath, a sharper, more desperate smell of fear, hunger, exhaustion. "Would you?" she asked dully.

"When you know nothing about a creature," the monk ground out, his voice hard as a rockslide, "expect it has come to kill you."


Shivers. A dangerous creature lurking in the woods surrounding a monastery in the middle of nowhere? This actually feels very intense and suspenseful. Very well written.

He was trained to respond quickly and decisivel to emergencies, but this... No one had spoken a word to him about how to handle a flame that could not be quenched. In the end, Newt dragged the screaming boy outside and buried him in the sand. The sand extinguish the unnatural blaze, but not before it had taken the skin off half Halter's body and melted one of his eyes in his face. He died three days later.

Holy crap

"Aren't you the one who claims the only schooling a man needs he can get from a butcher, a sailor, and a whore?"

Akiil shrugged. "The butcher and the sailor are optional."

Peter had been trying to follow the exchange, head swiveling back and forth with the conversation.

"Whats a whore?" he asked. Then, distracted by his earlier reasoning, "If a leech didn't kill the goat, what did?"

Hahahaha, such innocence.

"Filthy little..." growled Tomas. He made a move to strike her, but when she didn't flinch, he backed down, probably concerned she might try to bite his hand.
