It’s giving ACOTAR vibes except I’m actually enjoying it!!

I love this sort of fantasy! Never thought I’d enjoy a book with vampires in it, the night people, but here I am!

Okay starting to drag a bit

WOW. Good God this author is intelligent. I was dreading this book because a book about an Oxford translator sounded dreadfully boring. But now I anticipate being a translating nerd by the end of this.

This is exactly what I want from the fantasy genre. Finally reading something up my alley.

Though there isn’t a solid plot, the world built is beautiful and the characters are enjoyable. But it doesn’t completely make up for it

Halfway through the book and there isn’t a clear line of plot in sight. What’s the point of this book? Idk yet

Ugh this is such a satisfying read. Nothing like a slow burn that has a kiss on the eyelid making me squeal!

Re-reading a book for the FIRST TIME EVVEERRR. It’s one of my favorites from when I was in highschool and I want to see how it still holds up. I may regret this or I may be squealing at 3am again. We shall see.

Okay, honestly in love with the world that Maas has built in this series. When it comes to just straight fantasy, she did it really well. The creatures found in the forest, the curse, the villain—all done very well. I just can’t stand Feyre’s personality and I wasn’t invested in the romance of the book, which was the first 80% of the novel

Feyre’s personality kind of drives me up the wall. Why are most fantasy females written as brash, temperamental, hot-headed and nagging little bitches? A woman can still be strong-willed without these annoying traits. She feels that she is entitled to a lot that she isn’t, like how the Fae treat her. It isn’t written as character growth either—seems like it’s supposed to be “cute”. It isn’t

My issue with romance fantasy novels versus fantasy novels with romance in them is that when the romance is at the forefront of the plot, everything seems forced and trite. Whereas when romance is just a little bonus, things progress more naturally and the romance is more rewarding. No part of me is excited for or interested in the romance in this book

Let me get this straight. The premise of the book is that she kills a Fae, so the Fae tell her she can either die or go live with in the Fae realm. Obvi she chooses the Fae realm. In the few realm, she is lavished in riches and comfort and meals and there is a sexual tension between her and the Fae who took her captive (even tho she killed his friend just before) ?!?!? I don’t think the book can be redeemed. Why.

Okay…. So she isn’t a slave. She killed a Fae and now the Fae’s friends have to keep her as a guest in their lavish household where she isn’t required to do anything but just live. She can go wherever she wants in the Fae realm. Wtf

What is up with Sarah J Maas making the slaves/prisoners in her books all entitled like they deserve something?! This is a reason why she has always felt like a Wattpad writer to me as opposed to a legitimate fantasy writer.

A big issue I have with her writing is inconsistency. Like she is being led on a horse to the Fae realm where she will never be allowed to leave, and she is thinking “I’m being led to my doom….or my salvation?” like??? This nasty ugly bloody beast is definitely leading you to your doom you idiot why would you assume otherwise. The reader isn’t given any reason to think otherwise so it isn’t believable.

Aaaaand now I am seeing her old writing again. You really gonna bitch about having to wear a dress?! YOU ARE A SLAVE. YOU DONT GET TO BE PICKY. YOU ARE NOT AN IT GIRL. “I won’t wear a dress. I haven’t worn one in years. Especially with escape on my mind” uggghhhh ☠️ You can still escape in a dress, just rip it or take it off lol.

Okay this is actually a very good intro into a fantasy novel. I am enjoying it so far and am repeatedly telling myself “Authors can improve. Authors can improve.” To rid myself of bias from her previous series that made me want to stab my eyeballs with chopsticks. It has been an enjoyable hour so far! I’m just hoping the romance doesn’t ruin things for me.
