THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD. The beginning will hook you with a crazy breakneck fight scene, then immediately you are following Tau, a commoner, who is friends with Jabari, a lesser noble who is being trained by Tau’s father. They become friends which pisses off Jabari’s family. Jabari’s brother Kellen is a scumbag who is caught trying to rape a common girl. When caught, he wants her killed, but Taus father convinces

"We'll attend the burning tonight and then we'll go," she said. "We'll leave Kerem and all of this behind."
"I have nothing to give you," Tau said.
"Give? I want to be with you. I won't stay in Kerem without you, and I won't let them take me."

It is absolutely crazy to me that her dad left her to spend the day with her mom who had been missing for 16 years only to suddenly reappear, when she so obviously feels uncomfortable and distrustful of her. Like, go stay with your cousin omggg

Plot is cute so far

When you are set out to murder someone in a forest that is haunted by “Shades” that will finish you off if there is blood, quick movement, or loud noises, you have to get creative! I was like what the heck is their plan if they can’t draw blood or make noise?!

This is a very interesting premise! Sanderson wrote this after being approached by George R R Martin who was gathering short stories of strong women. Silence, our protagonist, has an inn and kills the bounty hunters who pass through, drugging their food and then following them out to the forest afterward.

I love the dialogue in this! It’s so rich

So weird I feel like this writing is so boring but then also I’m totally engaged and excited to see what’s next

Going behind the queen’s back to free traitors out of the castle jail is kind of a crazy thing to do when your queen can read your mind lol

I’ve read too many good books in a row—the writing in this book is shoddy comparatively. Not horrible, but enough that I kind of feel like I am wasting my time. The characters don’t seem very intelligent.
