Wooaaahhhh already a bit of a plot twist!

The author does a good job with introducing new characters. Keeps it interesting.

“Oh, and put in an order for a new hat.”

“Please.”

Kaz heaved a heavy sigh as he braved himself for three painful flights of stairs. He looked over his shoulder and said, “Please, my darling Inej, treasure of my heart, won’t you do me the honor of acquiring me a new hat?”

Inej cast a meaningful glance at his cane. “Have a long trip down.”

Inej crossed his arms. One minute he was making her blush and the next he made her want to commit murder.

What??? Okay so the child of murder and war gifts a beheaded head to the child of life, the child of life plays and coos at it until it comes to life?! This is suuuuch an odd book

David took up the practice of squeezing blood from the hearts of his victims into his hair. He was a furry man and any one heart yielded only a few tablespoons, but of course they added up quickly. Over time, the combination of hair and blood hardened into something like a helmet. Once, curious, she asked Peter how strong this would be. Peter looked up at the ceiling for a moment, thinking. "Pretty strong," he said.

"And while you're 'hearing' all this vital gossip, I might point out to you that no wise man tells all that he knows. And that he who carries tales has little else in his head. Do you understand me, Brant?"

"Hundreds of small eyes," he said, "opening up in the blackness, surrounding you."

Scud, as good as this news was, it was the wrong time. I was already in a fragile emotional state. I just about lost it right there on the launchpad.

"I don't want to hear it," he said, and pointed to the cockpit. "Get strapped in. The others are all ready."
