But if you're Indian, it's your job to know our treaties with the US and Canada.[...] Our relatives died fighting for them. Not some My-Ancestors-Came-Over-on-the-Mayflower relatives. Real relatives, whose bodies have turned into fertilizer in our cemetery on the Torn Rock.

There was only one rign. "Okay, they're interested," he said, like I didn't already know the Rez's current version of smoke signals. There were no charges if your party didn't pick up, so a lot of Rez phone calls made were purposely never answered. One ring: Yes. Two: No. And three: Maybe.

Our dad had modified the Rez Shack to the limits of his imagination and wallet. Our "room" was an old Airstream trailer, attached by an enclosed gangplank to a hole cut in the wall.

Where I'm from, you start with the trailer, then add-on rooms made of grey cinder block walls. I used to call it colonia architecture :D

A ton of Indians worked at Lockport, but no one chowed down at that drive-in, not with a name like Custard's last Stand. Besides soft-serve ice cream, their menu was mostly Little Bighorn-themed combos, including the Big Bighorn: a triple Angus beef burger and a bacon-wrapped hot dog, surrounded by sweet potato fries.

I suspect, if this were a regular novel, I might find plot and characterization thin. As a graphic novel, with the lovely distractions of great art, it's fun.

The narrative device--each chapter told by a different, non-recurring character--is bizarre, but I'm still enjoying it.

The meal itself was a mild meat stew--pork, I supposed--with white beans, root vegetable and potatoes. The men barely touched it.

Soylent green is people!

I have a thing for tricksters. The question is whether this one fits the cool archetype, or just a tedious twee facsimile.

Once, during one of our roadside smokes, the reverend had said that most people associate the desert with what is missing--water and people. "They never think of the one thing the desert has more of--light," he said. "So much light."

Every type is a violent type. Given the right circumstances, Gandhi himself might have attacked someone with a meat cleaver.

The sharp metal stings, drawing blood. When I pull my hand back from my ear, I can see the crimson stain on my fingers.

Because my mind works this way...menstruation. Do women in this world not have periods/ Because, once a month, Little Miss Thing's body would give away the fact that she's a Red. Unless they have magic tampons.

"I still don't know why you cared. You didn't even know I was different."

A moment passes in silence, broken only by the bark of lieutenants far below, still drilling even as the sun sets.

"You were different to me, " he finally murmurs.
Well, of course. Because she's the YA "speshul" snowflake. *rolls eyes*

Another Tor freebie. For the most part it has seems that Tor uses its free ebook program to push pretentious, boring shite that isn't selling well. But Bolander's No Flight Without the Shatter made me cry; it was so lovely. So rather than downloading the freeby and ignoring it, as I usually do, I'm reading this one.

If I hadn't just [re]read the Red Rising series, this might, maybe, not seem so derivative. But I did, and it does. It feels like it's trying desperately to hit all the emotional plot points of Red Rising, but in a fluffier, YA tone.

Despite that, it's moderately entertaining.

We think there are no strings attached to a miracle from God. But God has more strings than the devil. The devil at least tells you up front what the strings are.
