The sharp metal stings, drawing blood. When I pull my hand back from my ear, I can see the crimson stain on my fingers.

Because my mind works this way...menstruation. Do women in this world not have periods/ Because, once a month, Little Miss Thing's body would give away the fact that she's a Red. Unless they have magic tampons.

"I still don't know why you cared. You didn't even know I was different."

A moment passes in silence, broken only by the bark of lieutenants far below, still drilling even as the sun sets.

"You were different to me, " he finally murmurs. Well, of course. Because she's the YA "speshul" snowflake. *rolls eyes*

I join Maven in a transport, headed for the first appearance. I'm itching to tell him about the list... I'm seeing betrayal coming several miles away. It's announcing itself with sirens and flashing lights.

If I hadn't just [re]read the Red Rising series, this might, maybe, not seem so derivative. But I did, and it does. It feels like it's trying desperately to hit all the emotional plot points of Red Rising, but in a fluffier, YA tone.

Despite that, it's moderately entertaining.

So far...emphasis on "so far," this is rabidly derivative but still entertaining.

Library book=free=why not?
