a lot of the reviews i saw on here are super negative but i’m actually having a good time with it so far 💀 i also did not know the author or her videos so i’m not biased lol

i’m actually wondering how much of the twitter backlash in the book that not just June but also Athena receives was inspired by the criticism that Rebecca received for TPW

i get that the book is supposed to make you uncomfortable but ooooof

“editing a bad draft is far easier than composing on a blank page” — that’s one of my favorite writing tips actually, one that i always follow when i write. bad is better than nothing at all 🙌

I was today years old when I learned that the movie is actually not an adaption of the book, but rather that the movie (which is inspired by one of Clarke’s short stories) was written by Kubrick and Clarke and the book followed. 🙈

i take it back, some things that tom does ARE smart. i’m rooting for him ngl

it seems tom is talented at fucking everything up but NOT at covering up a murder

the next chapter is about everyone’s favorite, well-traveled, independent, emotional queen Margery.

“the church itself has always been a living organism, transforming year by year in response to new challenges and developments” — that is exactly why i don’t understand how people can use the church & religion to justify backwards and outdated ideas, rather than adapt it to more recent social changes. it’s part of society, and if society changes, why not also the church? it doesn’t make sense 🥲

The book suggests that Hildegard von Bingen perhaps had a romantic attraction to a fellow nun. It’s always complicated to try to pinpoint what the relationships were like back then, because people (especially from the background of the clergy) thought differently about them than we do today. But it is so interesting to think about, especially when considering that queer people existed in the Middle Ages.

The subchapter about gender-fluidity in the “Viking age” (in quotation marks because the term is a bit problematic) once again negates the point that non-binary identities are an “invention of the 21st century” 🌈

had to take a break for a few months because i was feeling a bit of a slump because of it, not sure why. i totally agree with its criticism on academia, so that’s not why? i am trying to continue now :)

The book has been extremely interesting and valuable so far. Disclaimer: I will definitely also pick up books by Palestinian authors on the topic, but as as general introduction for someone not aware of many of the international politics and backgrounds that surrounded the conflict throughout the decades, it is a good starting point.
