Such a compelling read. I honestly think this particular era would make a fascinating television show. It's still hard to believe how someone as obviously crazy and sadistic as Hitler was managed to gain so much power without anyone doing anything to stop him.

I keep wanting to look various people up on Wikipedia but I have to stop myself so I don't spoil anything I don't already know. This is probably the most interesting nonfiction I've read in the past year and a half. I'm going to have to find some more books about the Hitler era of Germany.

Fascinating story about pre-WWII Nazi Germany. Especially loved the story about American radio commentator Kaltenborn, who said that Messersmith was a liar when he described the Nazi's treatment of Jews and Americans, only to find out firsthand how right Messersmith was when Kaltenborn and his family were assaulted by the Storm Troopers for absolutely no reason.

I got a little nervous when I saw many of the people who awarded "Goon Squad" book of the year did the same with "In the Garden of Beasts", but thus far I'm enjoying it. Seeing as this is nonfiction about real people, surely it won't become as pretentious or filled with unlikable dipwads the way "Goon Squad" was.

Kind of disappointed. I was expecting Meghan (a Republican) to talk more about the views of her party she disagrees with. She does, but most of the book is just about her time on working for her campaign trail as well as what it's like to be a "daughter-of." She also seems a bit less mature than I previously thought of her.

I've only just started, so I don't have much of an opinion yet. It'll be nice to finally read the thoughts of a Republican in which I don't disagree with practically everything they say LOL.

I'm still loving it, though I'm saddened by how much I don't remember. As much as I enjoyed this book, it's really disappointing that I don't have many memories of it. I wish Clemens had continued writing fantasy instead of moving on to thrillers because I love this kind of story right here. Mogweed FTW!

Now we're getting to some stuff I remember. I always liked the shape-shifting brothers Mogweed and Fardale so I'm glad they've finally appeared. Things are getting really good and I'm glad I decided to reread the series.

Not quite what I remember (I don't recall Elena essentially being a little girl), but a few tiny little tidbits are coming back to me. Most of it is unfamiliar, but I'm pretty sure I remember the mountain man that was just introduced.

I read this book many years ago and loved it. If I remember correctly, I read the first four of the five book series but never wound up finishing. I plan to finally finish the series, but first I'm starting over from the beginning so I can remember what went on. The beginning is not what I remember at all!

While there are occasional moments where I feel drawn in to the story, I largely find this book to be pretentious drivel. Egan had an interesting idea and I love the different ways she manages to tell the story, but unfortunately none of the characters are very interesting and I can't help but have the opinion that Egan is trying (and failing) is trying to impress her readers with her "brilliance."

AVfoGS is an award-winning book but I'm really not sure why. I don't find it to be a very enjoyable read at all. The characters are all little more than cardboard and only a few of their "adventures" are mildly interesting. I'm very disappointed and hope I didn't pay full price for this book.
