“It was only when those dead, dark eyes, deep and remorseless, were turned upon a man that he shrank within himself, feeling that he was face to face with an infinite possibility of latent evil, with a strength and courage and cunning behind it which made it a thousand times more deadly.”

This is the third time I’ve read this book. Love. Love. Love.

The more I read the more I think of this book and it’s parallels to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Several of the characters’ powers remind me of something that Ransom Riggs would’ve dreamt up. This book is all the fun of Peregrine’s but with a little less cheesy teenage-y trope-y stuff.

So far so good? Lots of foreshadowing thus far so I hope some good red herrings are thrown in there for my amusement.

Every once and awhile I like to read a quick thriller as a palate cleanser. I love the genre and blaze through these kinds of books. Kind of sounds (at least from the dust jacket) like And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie.

Only problem I foresee is that one of the characters is named Topher and that TikTok sound plays in my head every time I read this name.

Is it sad that this series has become my “comfort” series?

Not sure how I’ll feel about this one. Currently Quentin is written as a sullen, “not like other girls” teenage girl character—very-depressed-emo-Bella Swan-esque. Not sure if I love it or hate it. Tried getting into the show many moons ago but the book has always intrigued me, for better or worse.

Slowly plugging away at this. Fascinating how simply delusional Speer is at times.

The beginning of the end of Ned Stark is always so heartbreaking.

1)Will this one make me cry as much as Orbiting Jupiter?
2)Will I be as mad at the end as when I found out he killed off Holling Hoodhood?
3)Will I love this as much as the Wendesday wars?

So far:
1) kinda sad (no tears shed yet)
2) slightly angry
3) super great book thus far!

Listen. I read. And I read A LOT. This book appealed to my 4th grade parochial-school self. I had read the second book in the series (though each could be a standalone) when I was in 4th grade and before I discovered Brouwer’s books based on hockey. I am glad I picked this up, and though the story is best suited for younger readers (I’d say 8-14ish), I devoured it.

Listen. I read. And I read A LOT. I can say that though it’s preachy, this is a pretty well researched and written historical fiction adventure. Definitely appeals to my parochial-school self. If I’d read this in like 4th-6th grade I probably would have devoured it as quickly as I did just now.

Recommended to me by my cooperating teacher during student teaching. Reading in advance of teaching a literature circles unit featuring authors of color. Super enlightening thus far!

Finally bought a copy of this (while in class teaching his work “Unusual Normality” with my Sophomores) and cannot wait to be moved. Beah has a way with words that cannot be explained.
