Most of the way thru the novel-in-a-novel. It's painful to read this, written (I imagine, having seen the movie American Fiction) as an indictment of what "readers" expect from a black writer.

Discussion of allocation of voted positions, esp. the house of reps. Fun things like how adding a state and increasing the # of reps can cause an existing state to lose a rep to another state (essentially the tie-break decision changes).

Voting systems are tough! Arrow's theorem says it's not possible to satisfy 5 particular "reasonable" criteria in a voting contest simultaneously. It seems we are feeling some of that in the current state of politics.

Murphy's law and intractability problems, eg traveling salesman and the like. Appreciate his comment about why people still trying to find a way to trisect an angle, which has been proved to be impossible in the general case, don't switch to one of these scheduling problems, whose solution would mean a $1M cash prize, fame, and probably other economic opportunities!

Considering space and time in the physical universe, and whether there might be other universes where things are different. Modern physics is pretty "out there," IMO.

Considering rain, snow, and other weather phenomena. As he emphasizes:

"...weather is never just weather. It’s never just rain."

Enjoying how he romps through so many things I studied long ago: infinite sets, cardinality, axiom of choice, continuum hypothesis, complex numbers, quaternions, etc. The discussions of results in physics are also interesting, but not as familiar to me.

The prologue's examples illustrating scheduling issues using an auto garage w/ a priority scheduling algorithm were great and counterintuitive (or, as he says, "surprising"). The examples showed a small list of tasks with some dependencies getting completed by a single mechanic in 12 hours, but adding a mechanic or using tech that shortened each task an hour made it take LONGER, ie an optimal soln must omit resources

Even the introduction was interesting to me (I mean, I assume the author intended for that part to be interesting, but it still surprised me).

One statement that struck me as profound:
"We know, and have known for some time, that humans are neither omnipotent nor omniscient, but we have only recently discovered that omnipotence and omniscience may simply not exist."

Chew on that a couple of minutes.

I didn't intend to be reading this book right now, I'd only put in a request to MNLINK to get it it and in the past it had taken over a month to get such books. This time, it arrived in a week or less!

Previous chapter was about biblical references, mostly about being alert for them, or perhaps about suspecting some piece of text that might seem out of place otherwise (eg "cup of trembling" in James Baldwin's story of brothers).

Eilish got fired from her job, the car was vandalized, she told the kids she sold it, her friend is convinced their missing husbands have been killed. Oh, and she slapped her 12 yo son in the face when he got to ranting at her.
