It seems Stevens lies to himself about his past pretty easily.

The wedding of Lila & Gary is getting so close now...after Phoebe had to run errands with Gary - getting his tux, visiting his office, picking up booze, getting cash; and after visiting a possible place for Phoebe to stay for the winter as caretaker. Plenty of barely-under-the-surface tension with these two.
