Rereading now that the animated series is dropping! This is actually my first time physically reading this since my first read was technically on audio when Andrew read the books out loud, live on Youtube in 2020. I'm excited to get a better look at the illustrations!

Wow. This first story is Christmas with a side of attempted murder. XD

I had to read an extra half hour last night because it was getting exciting!

Uh... wow. That took a dark turn.

I have all the mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I think it's well written and Chiavaroli does a great job writing very real people with complexities, shortcomings, and strengths. On the other hand, I want to slap so many people because I saw the red flags in this relationship miles away.

I'm having a like/hate relationship with this book. I like the historical half well enough (like, not love) but am really not enjoying the contemporary half so far. Contemporary is so hit-or-miss for me that I'm not surprised by this, but after liking the contemporary half of her book "Freedom's Ring" I had hope. Here's hoping I might like it better later on, but right now I want to slap several people.

Is it bad that I'm only 6 chapters in and have wanted to slap her sister three times now?

In this book world, people with the gift are able to extract memories and keep them in bottles. As a kindness, the main character just gave a homeless old man a memory of strawberries to comfort him while she finds him a blanket, and then she's thinking of strawberries with cream and y'all know my mind is going straight to the scene in LOTR where Sam asks Frodo if he remembers the taste of strawberries with cream. XD

Sharon Hinck has done a really good job taking inspiration from the story of Joseph in the Bible, but not holding SO close to that story that it feels like there are no surprises. I'm also enjoying what a colorful fantasy world she's created!

Oof. Reading about someone enduring a WWII air raid that lasted for HOURS is very stressful. I guess that says something for how well the author does at putting us in her character's shoes!
