I hear people compare Quaintrell to Sanderson all the time, but honestly, I like Quaintrell so much more. This book took a while to get going for me, but it's finally coming together and I am loving it.

I'm really enjoying this book. It's got a unique flavour. Definitely can see why this is a love/hate series, but it all works for me so far.

“The earth sustains us while we are alive, and we return to it after death. But fire, stone, soil, or even the sea, it matters nought, for it is the way of our living that is testament to our spirits, and perhaps the way that we die; and the way of our burial means little, for what we have been is gone, though our spirits may live on in the hearts of others . . . for a little while, at least.”

O how I love this book

I've been reading this book for nearly six months, and I'm not even halfway

And it's very good.

What is my problem? 😂

A slow start, but every bit as absorbing and intriguing as previous instalments.

Whilst this is recognised as the fourth book in this series, it's clear as day that this is the start of a sequel trilogy.

There is a reason these books are beloved: great characters, great humour, surprisingly grand worldbuilding, and they are so easy to fall into.

I feel many modern fantasy readers are jaded to the great works of the past. And that is fair, the genre is so rich and diverse today. But little today captures my imagination like the masters of the past.

Make no mistake, I think this trilogy is an all time classic.

There is no excuse for why I am taking so long to read this book.

Oh well 😂

I'm enjoying this book, but I'm not loving it. I real feel the world, characters, story and writing are strong but...did it need this many POV's and constant changes? I feel I never spend enough time with anyone to truly connect. This could be a really deep series but my immersion is, unfortunately, shallow.

Immensely readable, also not very good, I somehow find myself compelled and eager to read more.

Plotting is clearly Lucinda Riley's strong point. Her dialogue, however, most certainly isn't.

I loved the first three books, and this fourth one feels like a major step up already.
