this could be a dnf, still waffling. it's occasionally funny, and has some charm, but the term "flat affect" comes to mind. it's very tell-y, and does weird things like give a short summary, then a longer still 100% tell-y version. the structure and internal references make it all feel like unnecessary backstory also. :/

this is much longer than i thought. think I'm about halfway. seems weird to only have one side's letters, but perhaps there's an explanation coming.

some you's reviews longer than the damn books. this is how i end up with tab after tab of "i'll read it later" reviews until i just have to abandon browser and close everything

this is not what i expected. very (read: too) artsy and poetic, not at all academic. :/

it's very irritating to pick up a book based on loving a tv series or movie based on the series only to find you despise the source material. (i.e. every single mystery/detective/crime series where the novels are multiple pov doorstoppers that spend 95% of their time with everyone but the detective/other recurring characters)

when someone gives you their take on the philosophical what it's about, and you're intrigued, but then you see the superficial what it's about and be like, ugh, no. i don't think so.

the whole sinead rpf aspect is a bit weird, and i wish i remembered any of the jung stuff i read 30 years ago

Nothing like including a few of those little self-indulgent witty ideas we've all had to knock me out of a story.

it seems very unrealistic to me how so much sf just takes for granted that the humans/aliens will just trivially decode the other's audio/visual transmissions

everyone had politics, even if only some people had sex

had to go skim some bits of the previous book to get oriented, but so far so good

a good book. i can't believe i wasted a moment of my life on that stupid piece of trash afterword though.

when an author alleges something is beautiful but describes something hideous. see: why description is bad.

and the one for whom this book is named has appeared not at all... :(
