I love people with stuff they "started" like 6 years ago or just like 200 items on their "currently reading" shelf, whereas I am too ashamed of my tendency to start stuff and then wander off and forget about it to even mark half the stuff I start and imagine I will continue as "currently reading".

Why is the GR app like some weird alternate universe? Notification emails that work fine if opened in a browser just give errors in the app. No way to choose a specific edition of a book in the app. The contents of my feed is completely different in the app vs the website. Like, wtf.

I really hate what he's doing with the journal entries dated in 1944 but then spending the whole chapter talking about 1941 (or whenever, idek) it's very confusing. Also thinking about why it's good enough while reading but zero urge to pick up once set down. Maybe cuz it hasn't promised anything interesting or given any hope of a happy ending? idk, I certainly don't expect a happy ending for any of the chars.

well balanced show/tell coverage a nice surprise after the passive voice debacle, though a few of her examples were borderline for me.

I kept not picking this up and reading non-fic instead, but it's gotten a more interesting now. It does keep feeling like I should be at more like 90% than 40 though.

I was enjoying this quite a bit in the beginning, but am thinking it's gone off the rails.

Not sure this is going to stick. Was expecting humor, not laughing so far. Secondly, I don't think I ever learned but a tiny fraction of the history I need to properly appreciate this, and the 99% of the portion I did learn is long forgotten.

The preface in this book is dated July 1979. It's appalling how topical some of the example sentences are.

Not only not is he connecting the obvious dots, it's like he's completely unfamiliar with the idea that dots can be connected. Also the way the backstory is delivered seems a bit late and suboptimal. idk. Not uninteresting, more like the writing is just very slightly off. Also his BF is very sus and toxic and needs to go.

A story is a frank, intimate conversation between equals. We keep reading because we continue to feel respected by the writer.

Ok, I appreciate the point he eventually gets to in his commentary about not getting to choose the type of writer you turn out to be, but OMG the Turgenev story was awful.

Feels a bit more dated than I'd expect for a 10 year old book.
