language is complicated. i imagine this is very difficult to resolve computationally.

I didn't really have any clear idea what I was getting with this, I mostly just wanted to try the author, whose previous book manages to sound both appealing and too squick for me to sample so far. So far this is well written, but kind of meandering and leisurely, I'm not sure where it's going, if anywhere, and it's taken this long to figure out when the story is happening. (90s at least so far)

Insofar as one can be confident of such a thing on page ten, I believe this was an excellent purchase. 😁

I don't really expect deep characters from Wodehouse, they're just types, really. I think my problem here is Jerry is barely there at all, and Biff is a type I actively dislike. Random passers by are more sympathetic than the heros.

Bought a lot of books last month. I think I will try and do a no-buy month this month. (With the usual let's not be stupid exception that I'm buying anything on my wishlist that goes >50% off.) Let's see how long I can last.

When you're reading the blurb and it's really appealing, and you're going yes, yes, this sounds awesome, and then... they finish off by saying it's like WORST MOST LOATHESOME PIECE OF TRASH YOU'VE EVER READ.

Quite funny. A bit odd that I'm this far in and the guy the blurb would have you believe the book is about has only just shown up.
