Somehow I feel it's my duty to point out every first instance of the lack of capitalisation in 'Oh my God' and I have alas come to the first one. Why did you stop capitalising, Ms Henry?? You did it just fine In Beach Read.

I've never read holly black before, so as an introduction to her writing, I've got nothing to compare it to. Pleasantly intrigued.

well, then. I'm not sure if i went into this book expecting a similar style to beach read, but i know that i definitely appreciated the drip-feed of information that it seemed to be a master of...much more. i'm aware this is probably intentionally part of poppy's aggressive extroversion, but i miss when i didn't have to be thrown so much information in such casual ways, while recognising the intent to be subversive.

i feel like i must be the only person in the world who noticed or cared that she stopped capitalising the 'G' in 'Oh my God', and got annoyedso much that i got up, looked for my copy of Beach Read - published one whole year before - and confirmed that i was right. and now i have to sit here and just seethe about the grammatical state of a society that lets you write 'Oh my god' in a published book.

I finally figured out what this reminds me of!! Years ago, when i was in high school I read a book called daughter of the forest, about an irish girl with 6 brothers cursed to be swans, who can't speak for several years until she's spun them clothes. And a mean pregnant stepmother who turned her out of the house. It's uncanny, really. But I'm interested to see how this one plays out, now that the heroine has magic.

Everyone else can go die except beloved Rupert K. Now that he's finally in the picture and our nameless MC has finally ditched her psycho bestie. I did not feel an ounce of sympathy at the betrayal.
