I'm not even vegetarian/vegan or an animal activist and all this was a bit much for me. We'll see if it's addressed in the book.

... it would be so easy to damage it when you've got planes on the other side with hard materials that could puncture it. But it's not even a hot air balloon or a zeppelin. It's a living creature. A machine can be patched up, but a living creature is actually hurting. And in this world, there are other methods, you don't HAVE to use a blimp in a war, there are things like planes.

Downside with the book: the fabrications. They're not working animals going into battle - they're actually being used as the weapons, completely disposable aside from costs. The bats are motivated by terrifying them into dropping fletchettes, and if that's not going to work, they'll literally set them up for a plane crash. It's ridiculous enough putting a membrane full of gas in the sky as a battle ship...

This kept my interest but I'm glad I've finished it because I didn't enjoy it much. Now to read the first intro and then I'm completely done.

This book is highly disturbing. I thought it was supposed to be funny.

Even the beginning story about his family etc was fake. (what a relief). This may have been improved if the "author's" voice and "abridger's" voice were written in different styles to distinguish them. Otherwise I think it's a genius idea.

I looked it up and the Morgenstern book isn't real. Goldman wrote the whole thing. I knew the writing styles seemed too similar!

I'm curious... does anyone know if the original book was really just cut and put into this one? The humour in the writing sounds so much like the abridger's - but then on the other hand since this was his childhood favourite book it makes sense he would be influenced by it.
