After Wang's regular talk about "if you had even a basic knowledge of science" and waxing about philosophy, Shi Qiang is a breath of fresh air. I think you've underestimated Shi Qiang, Wang!

The worshipping is pretty disturbing (although I'm pretty sure that's the point). Not sure if it's meant to be a caricature or a reflection of reality.

Reminder quote on this page. The one about individual parts of ourselves being part of the whole that someone likes so you can't pick it apart and say they only like you for this or that and be upset they like this or that.

I am enjoying this a lot. Of course it's supposedly a romance book, but there's so much more going on. The advertising plot, the cricket and the family, the new friendships, her adventures...

The library's taken the book back so I've put it on hold again... I will probably be able to read it again in a month as there is one person ahead of me in the waiting list. :)

I've seen some reviews condemning this book's attitude towards women. I was surprised because in the beginning the women seemed as complex and active as the men. However, now in reading Wang's attitude towards Yang, I see what they may have meant. But I believe that portrays the character's problem, not the author's.

I had been imagining Nanabush as a benevolent god-like being, who, while playful to mask his hurt, is still morally 'good'. Therefore his treatment of Maggie (like an object to be possessed) has been confusing. At this point in the book I finally understand (though it has been mentioned explicitly before so I should have realised by now): he's a trickster and more of a character than a god. He reminds me of Anansi.
