I've been thinking about this and... I quit! (for now at least). Maybe I'll come back to it one day. But at the moment this is definitely not the book for me.

The account where her childhood home (UK) is now completely alien and other because she spent her teenage (development) years in her parents' country (Sudan)... isn't how it is in real life. Just a small picking point.

That last story was incredibly frustrating.

I doubt this book is meant to be funny, but somehow I keep finding myself amused. Maybe it's just the incongruity of it all.

I don't think this book is my sort of thing. It's been interesting to learn about the history, but otherwise it's a bit tedious.

I promise I'm enjoying the book, but I don't agree with the "native moral fetishising" (idk what the recognised term is). Nomadic people don't exist to be poster children for morals or angels. They're human beings in all our variety of good, bad and indifferent.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'll be satisfied no matter who the murderer is.
