I read this book in the fifth grade and I remember I really loved it, but the details are pretty fuzzy so I picked up a copy for $3.

Why doesn't anyone else do status updates? Is it because this is super obnoxious?

I hate this book because I can say anything without giving spoilers.

One thing that annoys me is that he doesn't tell you that it's the 70's until half way through the book. Which I figured out eventually because he mentions things like Nixon and Vietnam...but it would have been good to know up front.

What do we have a third gay criminal? What is the deal? I mean, I realize this is the early 70's and all the non-sex offender types didn't draw attention to themselves but...jesus christ.

I love how every time somebody does something racist it bites them in the ass.

Nooooo, I was reading this book while I was waiting for my new books to get here and now they're here and I still have 200 pages left. One of the books I ordered doesn't even have 200 pages. How many books do you think I can read in the next five hours? If I don't finish this one today I'll never finish it. Oh god.

I can't decide if this book is offensive or if I just spend too much time of tumblr and I've learning how to rationalize everything as horribly racist.

I'm pretty sure I just spend too much time on tumblr.

I thought things were getting offensive for a minute but then the author showed some self-awareness.

But seriously, teenage boys are quite possibly the worst.

I knew the characters were young, but damn son.

I got this book because the person selling it to me said it was good and they only wanted 50 cents for it.

It's on a booklist called "Books White People Need To Read" so that's a good sign.

I somehow managed to lose this giant book for about a week. How does that happen?

I don't want to finish this book because it's good and I don't know of any other books like it.

This happened a lot earlier in the book, but I'm really bothered by the fact that Piranha works at a drug store, lives in New York, has her own apartment and buys heroin. That's insane. I've been working at drugstore for seven years and I live in a cheaper city and I can't afford my rent and I definitely can't buy heroin.

What? This is a story about somebody else now? I hate change.

I'm never going to finish this.

lol, one of the characters in this book goes to Philly to score heroin. Everybody knows Camden is where you score heroin, come on.

I love that the main character works in a bookstore because it reminds me of Krysten, and her best friend works in a drugstore like me. Their complaints are so my life. I've been using the highlight feature on my Kindle a lot for this book.

I assume this is a kindle problem, but there are suddenly a bunch of sentences that don't make sense. Maybe my brain tumor is acting up, but I'm very confused.

This counts as reading, right?

I don't like this argument that if you're for gay marriage you're a classist, racists, transphobic jerkoff. These two things are not at all mutually exclusive. Like if you're for gays who want to marry you're against absolutely everything else that matters. That's insane.

They tacked on some additional thoughts a few years after they wrote the original essay:

"We know that for many people, marriage, and the benefits it can give, can be a form of survival. We believe that people can experience an immediate need for the benefits marriage would provide and a simultaneous hope for more expansive solutions."

Yes, exactly.

uhh, did this essay just say that locking people up for hate crimes is racist and therefore wrong?

I completely agree that the incarceration rate is a serious problem and our prisons clearly weren't meant to rehabilitate, and they DO destroy communities, BUT I don't think the solution is to ignore things like gay bashing until we can find a way to reform the system. Like, what the fuck?

I feel like I've gained so much insight into the way my asshole managers think...and like, Jesus Christ, at least Anthony is a famous chef with actually skill and knowledge. My bosses have all of this megalomania and they're nobodies who are going nowhere.
