"Fresh coffee," the clerk called out cheerfully. I counted in my head while I sipped my coffee. It was as good as it smelled; yum. "Thanks, Ron," Bernardo called out and went toward the coffee. "Coffee machine is over there." "He doesn't drink coffee or tea," I said.

He set out three cups and started pouring very dark, very rich coffee into them. "You like coffee," Lissandro said. "I'm just glad some of you are drinking it. I hate wasting good coffee." I breathed in the scent of the coffee, letting myself close my eyes for a moment and just enjoy it. I opened my eyes and smiled. "Sorry, got distracted by the coffee."

The moment we stepped inside, the rich, dark scent of coffee was everywhere. I realized I couldn't remember the last time I'd had coffee. "Fresh coffee, if you want it?" he said. "It smells like real coffee." Yes, we had bad guys to catch, but even crime fighters need coffee. "Boss says I have to keep coffee in the pot all day. He doesn't say it has to be bad coffee."

He took my hand in his. It was my right hand and my main gun hand, but since he was right-handed, too, one of us was going to have compromise our gun hand. I had to force myself to do what I normally did automatically, which was to pull my hand out of his, and play a few minutes of who was going to complicate their ability to draw their weapon.

Edward has really been such a bit character up until this book. He had more parts in some of the older books, but for the most part he wasn't ever a main character. So why are he and Anita acting like they're soulmates and BFFs all of the sudden? I hate how she's trying to force this artificial relationship NOW instead of building it naturally over the course of the last 19 books.

All this stuff with Olaf that's been going on for the last 70 pages is getting old. Quit discussing how he wants Anita to be his girlfriend, how you think he's going to kill someone, how he's not the best person to have as a partner. Back and forth, back and forth. Shit or get off the pot. He's a fucking unstable serial killer. Edward suggesting that Anita should humor him? Fuck no. BULLET IN THE HEAD. End of story.

The most sexist person in the series is Anita.

Nicky had been giving all the signs of flirting and saying yes to at least coffee ... He'd flirt, he might even do more if he got the chance and I was okay with it, but he was mine. I really, really dislike Jamaal. No man has any reason to kick or punch a defenseless and unarmed woman in the face. That's unforgivable.

Parts of this remind me of The Lords of the Underworld, but not in a bad way. It's a less romance-y and grittier version, with a likable heroine.

I really wish every one of Black's characters weren't habitually addicted to coffee. It really gets old reading about them making coffee, drinking coffee, sitting in coffee shops and the like.

This information naturally set my suspicious mind to wondering what Anderson might be hiding in the east wing, but maybe I'd just seen Beauty and the Beast too many times.
