What a great first chapter!! My daughter heard a lecture at school from the author, and I had read his previous novel, so this is next on my list - amazing language so far.

Loving this novel - completely engaged in the survival and quests of both women... need time to READ! :)

Man this book is hard to read. The corruption of someone's mind and spirit - especially a child in desperate straits and especially BY the person he believes he can trust - is so shatteringly complete. I find it hard to read the sections where we learn the truth of Jude's past in its details. Now, I am just angry with everyone in the novel for accepting Jude's walls. The corruption of lies can never be accepted.

Okay, Annie you are in trouble for giving me this engrossing book. I have to stop reading! But first - pivotal line: "Fairness is for happy people"(190). Wow. So Key to this novel.

This is so gorgeous and touching. While I am not even close to done, I feel like one message must be that for every horrid person, there are three wonderful ones to help heal the wounds - however awful - the few create.

The characters are vibrant. At this point, you are learning about them as a group and individuals. Willem's story of his parents and Hemming breaks my heart.

Can you hear me screaming "wake up" at Ada as I read this book? While she is admirable in her resilience, she is a blooming idiot. How can you have lived through everything she has suffered and still be so naive? One Stanislaus should be enough. Now Gino. They say that more than half the women in prison are in there because they did something foolish for someone who they thought loved them. Ada is no different.

This is an engaging tale of an industrious, clever, and resilient young woman at the onset of WWII. While I admire her in many respects as a go-getter, I cannot tell you the number of times in less than 100 pages I have been yelling at Ada for naivete , her silly romantic notions, and her gullibility. On one had, this is a woman who is making a life on her own, but on the other, she is blindly following a charlatan

This is an amazing book which is so terrifying. Most Americans feel comfort in the belief that there is a genuine integrity to the justice system. The stories from this lawyer erode that belief severely. His own encounter of simply sitting in his car after a long day at work listening to the radio and being attacked by a SWAT team simply because he was black and in a poor neighborhood make you fear for us all.

Just at the onset of this novel, I am delighted by the style of the writing and trajectory of the story - so excited to keep reading.

This book is so scary because it could be so true! The thought of the Chinese embedding a virus into all of the chips they make for our military equipment makes me physically ill. Humans cannot be this predatory, can they?

What an exciting opening!

Well, this started out as a typical murder mystery - boy from prep school found dead on grounds of girls' school, but it has taken an occult turn - can control lights, turn keys hot, ghosts appear. Love the suspense created by the days left to live for Chris Harper in all of the flashback scenes. He has 5 months left...

She is such an amazing writer. This is the kind of book you start and say, let me just read the first chapter. 65 pages later, you realize you should have headed to be a half an hour ago. It will be all I can do to grade papers this week rather than read this book!!

This is one of the most gorgeous novels you could ever hope to read. I will be recommending this book to every single person I know. Had I the time to write a full review, it would take hours and hours. I do not have that time - so I won't disparage this work by a shoddy few lines. For now, suffice it to say - magical writing and gorgeous messages. Thanks to Morgenstern for this classic beauty.

I adore this book so far - gripped by the story of the two young people and their "mentors" as much as I am by the gorgeous writing.

This may be the saddest most stressful book I have read in a decade. I love watching murder shows because it has happened and can't be undone, and the suffering is over, so it can still be fascinating to me. The suffering of EVERYONE in this novel is making me ache. I have sobbed through pages of this. Caitlyn's brother may be the saddest because he has lost everyone. I just want someone's life restored.

I should not be reading this book. It is the terror of every mother, particularly like me whose daughter is thousands of miles away so that goblins and boogeymen parole my psyche. Johnston is masterful at concocting a web of images which encapsulate the happy life of being a mother - the noise of her daughter's bag dropped from shoulder height, the images of her dressing table - gorgeous but pure banal terror for me

I was spurred to read this after watching the author's interview on The Daily Show and seeing Toni Morrison's recommendation of the work. It does not disappoint. This man is a gorgeous, fluid, poetic writer. I was simply left breathless at some of the sentences he constructed which encapsulate sentiments about racism so gorgeously and so profoundly. While this is short, I am reading slowly and luxuriously. Yum!

Lynch is masterful in his use of voice. I am so thrilled Locke is back to his smarmy, clever self. (When he is instructing Nikoros to say 'yes' to everything: "The more you rehearse this, the sooner it'll become a smooth, mechanical process allowing no time for painful reflection.") Makes me chortle aloud in an empty room! I also adore the creative cursing in this book!!

I love that this novel simultaneously takes us back to Locke's youth when he meets Sabetha and deals with the agony of the secret poison which looks to be killing him.... love this series.

This is wonderful beach fluff.

This book is written in a very engaging voice and smartly goes back far beyond the beginnings of Leopold's conquests to give the reader the background necessary to see the people and events in their proper perspective. I expect this to be fascinating but incredibly horrific as well.

This is the all-school read for the summer. I am really struggling with the first part because the idea of letting your child "unwind" makes me physically ill. I am really having to suspend my disbelief. I do like the tithing aspect of the radically religious family, but overall, dystopias are not my cup of tea... we'll see.

delightful and inspirationsal

WOW! I never expected this bloodbath! If this novel isn't meant to be an HBO miniseries, I don't know what novel is! Bravo - can;t wait to keep reading but have to work!

What a great book - the definition of fun and imagery - delightful characterization

Amazing writing, crazy scenarios, wonderful dialogue - a really good escape to a very different world.

Here is the worst image I could imagine. Amidst the chaos of the burning, sinking ship, of people frantically trying to live, a woman was swept into the sea as she gave birth!
