What an amazing writer! Her imagery of this poor, earnest family in an ethnic neighborhood of Brooklyn is just entrancing. The narrator is a seven year old girl who understands the beauty of her family and life but doesn't sentimentalize it. I love that in the middle of the first chapter we get a glimpse of her as an adult woman, too. I love this so far!

So, Bing got his comeuppance, but Vic, Lou, and Wayne are still in jeopardy! The twisting of the joys of Christmas to be insidious is terrifying in here. Wayne s smart, though, and realizes that his being is being leeched by the car for Manx. I love positive supernatural aspects of the novel though, the grandmother coming to Wayne and Vic's dad coming for her. That aspect is uplifting in the middle of the fear.

WOW! I am so scared. I have to stop reading for a while. Silly, me. I thought that Manx was gone for good, but no such luck. The bike has progressed to a triumph motorcyle, just like Vic has become an adult, but the really terrifying part is that Wayne is in jeopardy. For me, the scrabble tile earrings are soooo creepy because I have KE scrabble earrings. I may never wear them again!

This book is so terrifying - not just because of the demented characters and story line but because of the imagery. Check this out: "the wallpaper fizzled with a crispy fizzling sound like... handfuls of pine needles on a campfire" (159). The whole novel is alive like this with sound, touch, smell... all extra eerie because of the setting - a warped and evil Christmasland. I will keep going but I really am scared.

The first chapter of this book scared me so much that I stopped reading it for more than 6 months. It was winter time and too dark out, so I just felt unable to keep reading it. I picked it up again this summer sure that the sunshine would make it easier to handle. I was right, but only a little bit. It is still scary but thankfully Vic is a strong young girl whom I have to believe is going to be okay in the end.

Wow what a complex , fascinating book!

This book is the whole-school reading for this coming school year, so I am getting an early start.

Loving this mystery but engrossed in the heart wrenching plight of the parents.

Just finished part two of the novel - the murder is over, the community is fractured, and Dick and Perry continue on their misguided ways...

I am re-reading this classic for work - so great even though you know what will happen...

not loving this book - very dysfunctional family without a lot to like about them and a rather bizarre narrative voice. The only reason for me to finish this as a reader is to find out the true story behind Pat's problems. I am also struggling with seeing Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany... not casting I would have made.

This is a great novel - very like OS Card, taking Greek, Roman, Viking, Egyptian, Mayan mythology and creating a plausible world where magical people - Mages - live with us regular folk - Drowthers. The main character, Danny, is a gatemage who can make portals to other places, but is estranged from his family because gatemages are outlawed because of Loki, a past one who closed all gates and caused war.

What a gorgeous and refreshing tale. I just finished teaching The Great Gatsby where one character is more despicable than the next, so Antonia and her family as well as the narrator are delightfully refreshing. Also, the bucolic descriptions are so heart-warming.

I finished this lovely, heart-warming and hopeful book. The ending reminds me so much of aspects of my life as my parents passed, it was hard to read without crying. Spiritually hopeful, no doubt.
