I have heard it was the opinion of others that [the infection] might be distinguished by the party's breathing upon a piece of glass, where, the breath condensing, there might living creatures be seen by a microscope, of strange, monstrous, and frightful shapes, such as dragons, snakes, serpents, and devils, horrible to behold.

Perhaps an idea for a DIY Corona test?

Now the good old orthodox idea of a ghost is, of a very long, cadaverous, ghastly personage, of either sex, appearing in white draperies, with uplifted finger, and attended or preceded by sepulchral sounds—whist! hush! and sometimes the rattling of casements and the jingling of chains. A bluish glare and a strong smell of brimstone seldom failed to enhance the horror of the scene.

Seems legit, ain't it?

[...] I think no one can reasonably be expected to exercise common sense unless he is known to possess it. It is quite natural, therefore, that many of the spiritualists, lacking common sense, should pretend to have something better.

It is said that the same lady asked for and obtained a spiritual photograph of her brother, whom she had recently heard was slain in battle; and when she returned home she found him alive, and as well as could be expected under the circumstances. But this did not shake her faith in the least. She simply remarked that some evil spirit had assumed her brother’s form in order to deceive her.

Yes, of course!

The greatest humbug of all is the man who believes—or pretends to believe—that everything and everybody are humbugs. [...] If you can imagine a hog’s mind in a man’s body—sensual, greedy, selfish, cruel, cunning, sly, coarse, yet stupid, short-sighted, unreasoning, unable to comprehend anything except what concerns the flesh, you have your man.

The lab was a marvel of technological microminiaturization. For one thing, its computer – based on a trio of micromain-frames with ten gigabytes of capacity – took up no more room than a couple of suitcases, yet it was a highly sophisticated system that was capable of complex medical analyses.

I always wonder why authors are so specific about technological detail. Why not keep it vague & gain timelessness?

The human brain is finite—no more than a sponge of tissue inside a cage of bone—but the mind within the brain is infinite. Its storage capacity is colossal, its imaginative reach beyond our ability to comprehend.

The second story, THE LIFE OF CHUCK, turned out to be one of the finest pieces Stephen King has written in a long time.

Your best chance of survival was to be utterly selfish. Assuming that you had a place you could call home, the optimal strategy was to stay there (but not immure yourself), not answer the door (especially to doctors), jealously guard your hoard of food and water, and ignore all pleas for help.

On 12 October, the day that the flu spread through the elegant guests at the Club dos Diàrios [in Rio de Janeiro], the satirical magazine Careta (Grimace) expressed a fear that the authorities would exaggerate the danger posed by this mere limpa-velhos – killer of old people – to justify imposing a ‘scientific dictatorship’ and violating people’s civil rights.

Sounds familiar 100 yrs later

When James Joyce wrote, in his thoroughly modern novel Ulysses (1922), ‘Foot and mouth disease. Known as Koch’s preparation. Serum and virus’, he probably thought of a virus in much the same way as Azevedo had [that it is a venomous secretion].

JJ didn’t knew better, whereas the American President thinks that “the germ is so brilliant antibiotics can’t keep up with it.”

Zu letzerer gehörten etwa der gemeinsame Klebeversuch etwaiger Filmrisse, die Erhellung von Blackouts und die Kotzkritik.

“Thief! Sie bescheissenes Arschloch!”

Sigh. Almost every time the German added to a book written in another language comes out wrong.

It’s either beschissenes Arschloch (the form most frequently used) or bescheißendes Arschloch (present participle, seldom used).
Also, the formal “Sie” to address the Arschloch would probably be replaced by the informal “Du” in this kind of exchange.
