Seems a lot of what Hitler had to say about Jews in chapter I/11 (almost the entire chapter) he got from somewhere else. Lots of quotes from other antisemitic authors mentioned in footnotes, and they partly sound even more vile than Hitler. No direct mention of the “final solution”, but it’s lurking in the subtext everywhere. Glad to leave the chapter behind.

Here’s how editors of Mein Kampf were desperately trying to spell right:

1925: “Verballhornisierung” [sic!]
1930: “Verbalhornisierung” [sic!]
1939: “Verballhornung” [lucky guess, I guess]
1944: “Verbalhornung” [sic!]

Today’s exercise: Find similarities and differences in content and style in these two assertions & discuss underlying ideology.

Finished chapter I/10 (“Reasons for the breakdown”), which turned out to be long but also immensely stupid (as in ludicrously stupid).
The next chapter I/11 (“People and Race”) is considered as the most notorious one. Another kind of stupidity – heinous, frightful, dangerous.

Here was a key technique for managing the president: delay. Rolling something forward likely meant that something else—an equal or greater fiasco—would come along to preempt whatever fiasco was currently at hand. What’s more, delay worked advantageously with Trump’s attention span; whatever the issue of the moment, he would shortly be on to something else.

The great value of being president,in his view,was that you’re the most famous man in the world,and fame is always venerated and adored by the media. Isn’t it? But,confusingly,Trump was president in large part because of his particular talent,conscious or reflexive,to alienate the media,which then turned him into a figure reviled by the media. This was not a dialectical space that was comfortable for an insecure man.

Reading this Hilter book makes you, like, really smart. Not only smart, but genius, and a very stable genius at that!

It was the chaos of just doing things that actually got things done. Except, even if you assumed that not knowing how to do things didn’t much matter if you just did them, it was still not clear who was going to do what you wanted to do. Or, a corollary, because nobody in the Trump administration really knew how to do anything, it was therefore not clear what anyone did.

He had somehow won the race for president, but his brain seemed incapable of performing what would be essential tasks in his new job. He had no ability to plan and organize and pay attention and switch focus; he had never been able to tailor his behavior to what the goals at hand reasonably required. On the most basic level, he simply could not link cause and effect.

Today's exercise for German learners: Try to make sense of this sentence:
“Bei aller wirtschaftlichen Blüte wurde der Unmut dennoch immer größer und tiefer, ja es kam so weit, daß die Überzeugung »es könne so nicht mehr lange weiter gehen« eine allgemeine wurde, ohne daß die Menschen sich aber eine bestimmte Vorstellung von dem, was dann etwa hätte kommen sollen, gemacht haben würden, oder auch nur machen konnten.”

Die Tiefe des Falles irgendeines Körpers ist immer das Maß der Entfernung seiner augenblicklichen Lage von der ursprünglich eingenommenen. Dasselbe gilt auch über den Sturz von Völkern und Staaten. Damit aber kommt der vorherigen Lage oder besser Höhe eine ausschlaggebende Bedeutung zu.


The first few sentences of chapter I/10 (“Reasons for the breakdown”) are almost comical in their insignificance.

Halfway through and there is yet no romance in sight. There's only one potential male candidate for the female narrator but she claims she doesn't like him. So what's the deal? I suppose Mrs Pilcher didn't write about F/F relationships?

She may be dead by now and I never went [to see her], and she’ll think I simply didn’t care!

Isn't that a strange use of grammatical tenses? Since when will dead persons think?

According to Hitler success in propaganda is determined by three things of utmost importance:
1. Keep simple. Stupid man must understand.
2. Repeat often.
3. Repeat often.

In an act of heroic self-sacrifice I have now finished the first three chapters. I’m exhausted – a break during Christmas holidays is well deserved.

Hitler mentions the “Away-from-Rome” movement. In a bold (or maybe even suicidal) act someone (editor, typist, typesetter?) changed this to “Away-from-Berlin” for the 1933 edition of Mein Kampf. It was changed back in 1937.

Hitler’s criticism of parliamentarism is not fundamentally wrong in all respects. Only his deduction is an absurd conspiracy theory that is second to none. How could the people who read Mein Kampf not realize it? Or did they deliberately ignore it?

Chapter 3 (“General political considerations from my time in Vienna and other things”) proofs to become a footnote whopper.

Meine größte Freude behielt ich für mich. Das Gedicht Mein Vater war in der Leipziger Reclam-Anthologie Denkzettel. Politische Lyrik aus der BRD und Westberlin gedruckt worden. Dat Kenk vun nem Prolete in einem Buch zusammen mit Martin Walser, Peter Rühmkorf, Marie-Luise Kaschnitz, Erich Fried, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Heinrich Böll und vielen anderen. Ach, Pappa!

In Hamburg-Eppendorf klebt die DKP Plakate zur Wahl im November 1972 und Hilla dichtet den “Erlkönig” um:

Wer schleicht so spät durch Sturm und Wind
weg von Urahne Mutter und Kind?
Es ist ein Genosse mit Kleistertopf
wohl aus der Gruppe Eppendopf.

Binge-reading chapter I/2 (“Vienna years of study and suffering”). Will it ever end?
A few of Hitler’s observations are correct, his conclusions on how to solve problems in society utterly wrong. Verbal images read almost like satire and are deconstructed in footnotes in hilarious ways.

[Die Mutter] hatte Angst. Angst vor der Geschichte, in der sie lebte mit diesem kranken Mann, Angst vor der Geschichte, in die sie bald hineingeschrieben würde, Angst vor dieser Geschichte, die sie doch gar nicht erzählen wollte. Erzählen wir uns deshalb unsere Geschichten, dachte ich, immer neue Geschichten, erfundene oder erlebte, aus Angst vor dem Ende einer jeden Geschichte? Auch der eigenen?

Hitler, at the age of 20, called his worldview a “granite foundation”; others see it (more accurately) as a sign of “early stagnation”.
