oh my heart is BREAKING for tenkubashi!! he has been treated like an unbreakable weapon for 7 years and yet he is utterly powerless when it comes to the two people he cares for the most in the world. i’m LOVING the focus on him in this volume so far, especially since we always see him as the calm and collected foil to akira’s more panicky and awkward personality

this is perhaps THE most devastating way that this reveal could’ve played out!!!!!! the desperate relief pouring out of will because HE HASNT SEEN THE COLLAR YET. all of the sick irony that we’ve been experiencing WITH will up to this point has been flipped on its head and now WE know something that he doesn’t and it’s brilliantly devastating. i need to scream from the rooftops actually what the FUCK now

in retrospect i really should’ve predicted this as the culmination of cyprian’s arc in this book cause it’s been all about him really seeing the ugly truths of the world and of the stewards and realizing that the perfect, pure righteousness he strove for just simply isn’t realistic. people make desperate choices when they’re faced with impossible situations. and james did a similar thing!!!!!

“or maybe he’d been falling since bowhill, and it was the moment when everything hit” i’m IN LOVE with this description of everyone (mostly) finding out that will is the dark king bc he really has been on his own private free fall for this entire book. but now that he’s finally hit the ground, it’s a NASTY impact but at least it means he can eventually pick himself back up and move forward. eventually.

it cannot work between them until will’s identity is revealed and i love that will is keenly aware of that. these little betrayals in the form of their flirting are nothing compared to the betrayal of sleeping with james under false pretenses, and so he doesn’t even kiss him. i already cannot wait to see their arc continue in book 3

the moments of tension between these two throughout this book have truly been the highlight bc they’re simply ELECTRIC. and this moment really was the culmination of their opposite arcs: james separating himself from his past life and will desperately struggling to fight against his but never properly allowing himself to confront it because he’s doing it all by himself.

hearing the hand’s backstory about the true horror of sinclair/sarcean’s power of possession and then immediately starting the next chapter with will slinking away from camp to use that very same power??????? brutal

i really cannot remember so much about this arc but jean-jacques being so stunned at noé’s show of respect towards him is very telling. so is his general design with his eyes being covered most of the time

i think noé’s reckless optimism would be way more annoying if we hadn’t seen him get angry and beat the shit out of people several times now. like yes, he always gives people the benefit of the doubt at first, but he has his limits and we’ve seen him reach them!! he’s also a pretty capable fighter so it doesn’t feel like he’s serving himself up for slaughter by maintaining that positive outlook

OH MY GOD THEY MADE IT EVEN CLEARER???????? vanitas is so fucking stressed about noé and so that panic is bleeding out into the distrust that was definitely already brewing since the dhams joined their mission and making him even more volatile and crabby. AND DANTE CLOCKED IT OF COURSE

LOVE johann matching vanitas’ freak here to try to protect dante!!! i remember liking the dhams in the anime but the manga is really making me appreciate them even more. i can’t wait to learn more about them and their history

DANTE KNOWSSSSSSS that little smirk when vanitas waves off his supposed indifference towards noé getting captured. i do think there is some truth in that though, vanitas knows what noé is capable of and probably trusts that he can hold his own until they can find him. is he still worried underneath that though and overcompensating to hide it? absolutely

vanitas being so closed off about what happened IS the evidence of his lingering vulnerability, but jeanne isn’t as skilled as vanitas at recognizing that in someone and so she completely disregards it and thus misses the opportunity to gain the advantage she wanted so badly

jeanne this is exactly how vanitas felt during your first encounter!!!!!!!! but of course jeanne isn’t as cunning as vanitas, so she has no idea how to actually capitalize on this advantage, plus vanitas has had time to process everything that happened and is much better at compartmentalizing anyway

jeanne my love, not that an eye for an eye is always right but let’s not forget that vanitas forced himself on you during your very first encounter. and the ways in which she “forced” vanitas were very differently intentioned so !!!! but i think this goes to show how much shame she has when it comes to ANY desire that is singularly her own

already emo over the fact that jeanne probably slept on the floor with vanitas because he said he would be uncomfortable sharing the bed with her

okay i just had to read the omake first because jun mochizuki you are a comedic genius!! noé thinking that VANITAS is the one who gets lost all the time and roland being vanoé shipper supreme by suggesting he see it as a bonding opportunity???? roland protecting everyone’s privacy BUT vanitas’ because he’s simply that obsessed with getting to know him??? 10/10 no notes, every extra in this manga is incredible

noé still being a rough sleeper and clutching anything within arm’s reach because he misses louis and domi so much??????? ouch but also vanitas hanging upside down in the window and fetching breakfast for them to eat on the roof together is so cute wtf

this kiss has none of the shojo-esque sparkles that the first one did, because then we were seeing the full scope of the act vanitas was putting on. but this one is much more romantic anyway because it feels more REAL. the light is coming from a warm fire, they’re half dressed, jeanne has the control but not in a nefarious way. what a beautiful page

OKAY so the first time they kissed, vanitas forced it upon jeanne because he wanted power over her. and now this time, jeanne is forcing it on vanitas (and is even higher than him in the frame which i LOVE) because she’s trying to HELP HIM. literally forcing him to receive her gratitude and drink the water for fucks sake

no i’m not done screaming about this page actually because vanitas saying “you’re all naive, you and noé” is so !!!!!! they’re naive in his eyes because they refuse to kill him. because they, to varying degrees, do not see him as this horrible, ignoble person unworthy of life. and that makes them naive??????? oh sweet vanitas your self loathing is showing
