physical affection clearly comes so naturally to jean despite the trauma he’s endured and it’s beautiful to see him reconnect to that part of himself through his time spent with cat, laila, and jeremy, who are all also very physically affectionate. i am losing my shit over him detangling laila’s hair

jean picking out blue clothes cause he knows it’s jeremy’s favorite color?????? and he’d complimented him when he wore a blue shirt way back when?????? AND jean’s favorite color being brown partially because it’s the color of jeremy’s eyes??????????? yearner alert yearner alert sound the fucking alarms

ouch jean slowly starting to realize that although rhemann has the ability to hurt him, he never would. similar to jeremy choosing to take the high road despite feeling the urge to go low at times. he’s been subjected to people’s unchecked, basest, most violent desires for so long that he’s forgotten that it’s possible for people to choose goodness instead

“it makes you more interesting. not your capacity for unkindness, but how fiercely you fight against it” me and jean are on the exact same wavelength about jeremy. it would be SO BORING if he genuinely never got rattled or never wanted to start throwing punches. him relentlessly CHOOSING kindness is why kevin finds him so incredible i think. he sees redemption in jeremy that he wants to see in himself one day

SASSY JEREMY IKTR oh my god it is so satisfying seeing the cracks in his “24/7 sunshine” persona!!!! part of why he’s so sunshine now is because he’s trying really fucking hard to be that way, not because it necessarily comes so easily to him

idk if it’s because it took us 600 pages to get to an exy game in this trilogy or because the trojans’ energy is so palpable in the writing of the buildup but fuck it i am so hyped for the stupid stickball game okay

jean fully loved kevin and was punished severely for it cool cool cool i swear every new piece of backstory we get from jean is more heartbreaking than the last

JEREMY??????? being 300 pages into this book i should not be shocked that that’s how we’re ending this very sad and intense chapter but !!! consider my pearls clutched!!!!!! love the parallel of jeremy threatening to get jean decaf like jean had threatened to abandon jeremy at a rest stop. they both just say “you won’t” to the threats cause they KNOWWWW

the friendships between cat/jean and laila/jeremy are everything to me actually!!!! their dynamics are SO different but equally lovely and make my heart ache

kevin and jean’s relationship might just be the most interesting in the entire series. every one of their interactions is absolutely FASCINATING. especially from jean’s pov as he struggles to parse through his awe and disgust and devotion and hatred. as he tries to see a path to healing in kevin and comes up short every time. as he wonders if they could ever really move past it all and be at peace

all of this chaos and all i can think about is jeremy "pushing past andrew like he didn't even see him" to get kevin out of jean's space. sunshine boy gets real serious real fast when he needs to and i LOVE IT

the web of character dynamics in this chapter is making me kick my fucking feet with excitement this is DELICIOUS

it's so lovely to see the different ways in which jeremy, cat, and laila each go about helping jean with his healing journey!! i am kind of obsessed with the progression so far

it's amazing how jean has really come to see laila's house as his safe place, like he actually yearns to go there when other teammates push too hard about his past or when he just feels generally exhausted by it all. really goes to show how they understand him in a way no one else does

"jean wouldn't let his gaze linger, but he saw enough to put a hungry knot in his gut" oh! okay! i love getting reminders every now and then that jeremy and jean are annoyingly attracted to each other, like it's just an accepted fact in their minds that they both think they can't act on. i am going to go insane once they finally realize that they CAN and SHOULD
