Jeremy Maddux is reading The Origin of the Palestine-Israel Conflict
"If the principle of self-determination is to rule, then it is to be remembered that the non-Jewish population of Palestine - nearly nine-tenths of the whole - are emphatically against the entire Zionist program.. To subject a people so minded to unlimited Jewish immigration, and to steady financial and social and social pressure to surrender the land, would be a gross violation of the principle just quoted...'

'The roads traveled by Hitler and Watson began in different parts of theworld in completely different circumstances with completely different inten-tions. How did these two men—one an extreme capitalist, the other anextreme fascist—form a technologic and commercial alliance that would ulti-mately facilitate the murder of six million Jews and an equal number ofother Europeans?'

'I imagine Mario Savio turning over in his grave at the antics of Antifa and others as Berkeley was turned into a war zone by leftist-inspired censorship storm troopers and jackbooted, mask-wearing street gangs. Americans watched a respected egregore being turned on its head as police stood idly by in passive acceptance, as ordered by the cowards and political malcontents who sign their paychecks.'

'The mantra of the New York Times—“All the News That’s Fit to Print”—is a lie whose object is incitement and the propagation of insane myths and irrational policies designed to steer a proud national legacy into the oncoming pathway of the Mack truck of globalism and cultural self-destruction.'

Enter IBM and its overseas subsidiaries.Solipsistic and dazzled by its own swirling universe of technical possi-bilities, IBM was self-gripped by a special amoral corporate mantra: if it can be done, it should be done. To the blind technocrat, the means were more important than the ends.'

“Well, he had a goddamn heart attack! He’s only thirty-six years old! Who has a heart attack at thirty-six? I’m sixty-five and I haven’t had a heart attack!” “Glenn, can’t we just tell Elliot how glad we are that he’s going to be all right?” “I am glad. But this wasn’t completely unexpected. He was a fat kid with high blood pressure, and the doctors told us back then that he had to lose weight or he'd be sorry later"

I'm not too far into this one, but I feel like it's not grabbing me so far. If I were younger and craving a bit of the old 'in-out', maybe. But this, coupled with the Hillary Trilogy by Angel Gelique, are convinving me that maybe I've grown out of extreme horror.

'I was unable to alter the course of the narrative: anything reported in the fiction was a fact that I had to accept. However, I was free to take advantage of the gaps in the narrative. The text of a work of fiction, as I understood from the first, reports in detail certain events from certain hours in the lives of the characters but leaves unreported whole days, months, years even.'

This book is slowly losing me, going waaay off the rails from what it spent the first half setting up.

“' Used to be just down the coast from the pier at Santa Monica, like a little Disneyland. All kinds of corny rides and concessions and like that. It closed at the end of the sixties but people still talk about it. It pisses me off that I never got to see it. It was so perfectly California. Just this cornball innocence.'"

This book is great so far, minus the over-romanticizing of California.
