Rarely has a book started so promising and gotten so much worse with time....

Sublime so far

Very compelling so far, but any book that describes attraction between two adults and describes features as both physically attractive and 'Adolescent' is a massive ick to me.

Beautifully written, makes me miss Cairo so much

At first I thought the confusion I felt detracted from the book and was a weakness. Now I realise it is intentional to some degree and is supposed to mirror how the characters feel

Truly beautiful and primordial mythos. Quite possibly better than Tolkien's novels...

I can't say I know what the overarching plot is so far but I'm loving this book!

War, war never changes....

The multiple perspectives really add to the depth of the novel. The author has clearly done a lot of research too. The impact of Takfeer on people is explored very well - but interestingly only as it relates to Muslims.

The author manages to describe the religion and culture of the Muslim Sudanese characters so well, but makes no parralel eddorrtd for the other characters in the book..... Which is a little strange?

That is a good point, how does one translate مسخره into English? Shenanigans is the closest word I can think of 😂

- this is an extremely cosmopolitan prison!

- Dostoevsky truly describes the psyche and soul like no other author I have ever read

- Dostoevsky describing the others character's 'irrational hatred' for him as a nobleman, then describing a two tier prison system where you can buy amneties and perceived luxuries is wildly out of touch 😂

Oooooft the author was also a fan of Dostevesky 😭

The mix of cynicism, self awareness, nihilism and isolation in the book reminds me so much of Dostevesky's Underground man...
