Some truly insane details in chapter 2 lmao
1. Wizards have slaves (house elves)
2. The Dursley’s literally imprison Harry in his room
3. The Ministry of Magic’s surveillance of underage wizards would make the Thought Police of 1984 proud.

Interesting, this book starts with a recap of Harry’s story including brief explanations of Quidditch and descriptions of the Dursleys.

Very intense chapters. Feels nearly visceral in a way very few books are capable of.

Good so far. A couple things that I bristled at, but overall the author takes a very common sense, easy to understand approach to the Bible and he communicates the meaning very well.

“Harry didn’t see how he could—yet he sometimes had the horrible feeling that Snape could read minds.” 👀👀👀

Absolutely love the Mirror of Erised chapter. Knowing how important the invisibility cloak is to the overall story made it’s introduction really stand out this time.

Just finished the chapter where Winston reads Goldstein’s manifesto. It reads like it’s actually Orwell’s manifesto and it’s astonishing. Felt like I was reading a whistleblower’s account of the last 100 years of human history. I wouldn’t be surprised if Orwell wrote this chapter first, and then filled in the rest of the story around it.

I forgot how great Ron is in the books. He’s not a dumbass!

Just read the Sorting Hat chapter. I think it’s neat when novel writers try their hand at songs or poems and write them into the story. I know Tolkien does that a lot.

When I read the Diagon Alley chapter, I didn’t picture the first picture the movie, I pictured Universal Studios… WILD!

It’s a joy to return to this story.

Laura’s really frickin’ slow at reading 1984 so I decided to start The Sorcerer’s Stone and begin my first ever re-read of Harry Potter. I’m very excited!

Just finished part one. Man this sh*t is depressing bro.

More hopeless and drab than I expected. Very good though. It’s interesting to compare this to other dystopian literature, namely Brave New World. Both books/authors agree on the profound importance of books and both go out of their way to describe the ways sex is corrupted in their respective universes. On the lookout for more similarities and differences.
