Man, Mr. Antolini gives the best advice. But the Catcher in the Rye wouldn’t be what it is if the chapter ended with Holden taking it to heart and turning his life around. Lots of emotions. Excellent chapter.

I wonder what Salinger thought of It’s a Wonderful Life. In chapter 17 Holden goes off on this wild but inspired rant to this girl about going off into the wilderness together. It instantly reminded me of the scene in It’s a Wonderful Life where George asks Violet to climb Mt. Bedford. Holden’s girl, Sally—like Violet—is appalled.

Wow, amazing chapter (11), Holden reminiscing about his summer with Jane. Cuter and more heart aching than pretty much any childhood love story I can think of.

The “voice” is incredibly strong. I see why we read this in high school even though there’s a lot that went over my head

Kind of a boring chapter. Twenty pages spent on explaining that “the serpent” in Genesis is a divine being and not an ancient version of the modern snake.

Extremely well observed. All the characters feel like people I’ve met or know. Holden is hilarious but I’m sure he’ll become grating. Love it so far

Fantastic

Wow… It pains me to say this but The Chamber of Secrets and The Heir of Slytherin chapters are terrible! The movie does it way better. In the book, Tom Riddle basically recites exposition every other line. He’s even the one who reminds Harry (i.e.; the reader) that Fawkes’ tears have healing power. What? And he completely lacks the menace of even the most forgettable super villains. I’m stunned.

Snakes have their own language but spiders speak English?

I don’t think the writing has improved much, but Rowling sure knows how end her chapters with a cliff hanger. It’s hard to put the book down!

Kenneth Branagh is REALLY good at delivering Lockhart’s lines lol

Much like Dune, I keep thinking about all the ways the movie did something better. The movie is a really good adaptation and where it’s not faithful, it’s an improvement. I expect things to pick up soon
