I tend to prefer the familiar roads with a new guide verses taking a totally alien (and you are right, gross) direction with the horror.
The thing with what terrifies us as people is that it doesn't change. Generally humans are afraid of the same things, the same tropes, the same phobias. They are hardwired into our bodies, so it makes sense to use them when trying to freak out a reader. That said, I have nothing but respect for writers who are able to take those familiar fears/situations and turn them around in some new and creative manner.
With those that try the new route and experimentation, if they succeed, awesome. However generally they tend to lean on things that are hard wired into humans as well, such as things that squig us out or gross us out rather than trying to find new ways to scare us.
For myself, I tend to lean towards things that scare me, or that I know scare those around me or the populous in general. But they also have to be things I experience or have some sort of investment in.
Terrorism, for example, isn't so much of a fear for Canadians as it is for Americans, so I won't write a story involving it. I understand the fear, but don't have the same fear that others have, so I won't do it justice if I wrote something involving it.
I hope that helps to explain it. If not, let me know and I will take another stab at it. :)(less)

As 2025 closes

Well, it's been a year since I wrote a blog entry. What have I been up to?

Mostly working on editing and putting together anthologies that aren't mine, but rather stuff for Armoured Fox Press. I am proud of every one that I publish, but I also recognize that it takes away from my own writing, and that part saddens me.

On that note, I got head hunted to work on an erotic video anthology that is curre Read more of this blog post »

So, like many in the 40K fandom, I was curious about the Krieg. When this book came out, I was interested, what insights could it add to what had already been released?
Well, it was an okay book. The audio book was wonderfully narrated, and as with a

Okay, so after the first book, I kind of knew what to expect going into this book. We continue to see our protagonist grow his family (*cough cough* Harem) and take on the various tasks people bring to him. Family heirloom? Sure, let's fix/make that. ...more

I was excited to read this book, as Legends & Lattes is one of the top books I have ever read. I figured, they captured lightning with the first book, so the second will be just as good. (even if it is a prequel)
