From more recent works, though, I have to say I love Karou and Akiva from Laini Taylor's fantastic Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, and Nazafareen and Darius from Kat Ross's The Fourth Element series.(less)

There are time when I can't make progress, but those invariably have to do with life circumstances preventing me from writing, or from something in what I have previously written, so that I have to go back and fix it before I can move forward, and I just haven't figured it out yet. A writer is not a machine; even someone with no other obligations cannot just write and write and write nonstop for eight hours a day, seven days a week, without pause. We all need fallow periods.(less)

The Children by Melissa Albert
"The concept is fine, and the structure should help move things along, but it doesn’t. Partly because the characters never really come alive for me. Partly because while the author is clearly talented, and her subject very personal, the self-conscious" Read more of this review »

All Clear by Connie Willis
"After reading Blackout, All Clear is more of the same. More running around, more miscommunication, more angst and endless blathering about retrieval teams. There are multiple timelines, a la the first season of Westworld. There is some romance, which" Read more of this review »

Robin McKinley
“I don't put up with being messed around, and I don't suffer fools gladly. The short version of that is that I'm a bitch. Trust me, I can provide character references.”
Robin McKinley, Sunshine

H. Jackson Brown Jr.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

Sarah Rees Brennan
“I expected something a little more castle-shaped," said Jamie.
Nothing lasts forever," Nick said. "Except demons, of course."
Has anyone ever told you that you're a charming conversationalist?" Jamie asked.
No," Nick replied honestly.
I cannot tell you how much that surprises me," Jamie told him, and Nick gave him a half smile.”
Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Lexicon

Sarah Rees Brennan
“Fear's useless. Either something bad happens or it doesn't: If it doesn't, you've wasted time being afraid, and if it does, you've wasted time that you could have spent sharpening your weapons.”
Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Lexicon

Megan Whalen Turner
“If I am the pawn of the gods, it is because they know me so well, not because they make my mind up for me.”
Megan Whalen Turner, The Queen of Attolia
