From more recent works, though, I have to say I love Karou and Akiva from Laini Taylor's fantastic Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, and Nazafareen and Darius from Kat Ross's The Fourth Element series.(less)

There are time when I can't make progress, but those invariably have to do with life circumstances preventing me from writing, or from something in what I have previously written, so that I have to go back and fix it before I can move forward, and I just haven't figured it out yet. A writer is not a machine; even someone with no other obligations cannot just write and write and write nonstop for eight hours a day, seven days a week, without pause. We all need fallow periods.(less)

First I do have to say, my kids, ages 12 and 6, really enjoyed this book as I read it aloud to them.

I, on the other hand, not so much. Stephen King likes to make self-deprecating remarks about having a "tin ear for language," but he should meet Andre

I would absolutely read the adventures of Mildmay the Sleuth, solving crimes and busting heads in the quest for truth! Honestly Mildmay makes this series; he is a precious diamond, and it was extremely gratifying when he pulled himself t

Very much not a book that's going to appeal to everybody, or even most people, probably, but I fell in love with Felix and Mildmay, how broken and struggling and real they seemed, and I adored reading about their ... "adventures" seems like

Robin McKinley
“I don't put up with being messed around, and I don't suffer fools gladly. The short version of that is that I'm a bitch. Trust me, I can provide character references.”
Robin McKinley, Sunshine

H. Jackson Brown Jr.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

Sarah Rees Brennan
“I expected something a little more castle-shaped," said Jamie.
Nothing lasts forever," Nick said. "Except demons, of course."
Has anyone ever told you that you're a charming conversationalist?" Jamie asked.
No," Nick replied honestly.
I cannot tell you how much that surprises me," Jamie told him, and Nick gave him a half smile.”
Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Lexicon

Sarah Rees Brennan
“Fear's useless. Either something bad happens or it doesn't: If it doesn't, you've wasted time being afraid, and if it does, you've wasted time that you could have spent sharpening your weapons.”
Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Lexicon

Megan Whalen Turner
“If I am the pawn of the gods, it is because they know me so well, not because they make my mind up for me.”
