It sounds like a great book for these guys! HNR No Right Turn. Probably won't, but I'm glad you found it for them.I quite liked Jackaby, but I'm also a fan of Sherlock Holmes, (not just Benedict Cumberbatch's 'Sherlock,' but all incarnations of the character) Doctor Who and stuff like that...
Reading is reading, have you tried graphic novels with these young men like Saints and Boxers by Gene Luen Yang
and
?
We can only use one graphic novel per year in our curriculum and we intersperse the graphic version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein with the Retold Classic Novel: Frankenstein version. This is a class for struggling readers. One of the class novels for our 9th graders is Gene Luen Yang's American Born Chinese.
HYR Game* by Walter Dean Myers
*I am reading this novel with a group of boys in a different section of English 10. No gearheads in that section, but a small group of dedicated basketball fans.

FYI, Walter Dean Myers, Chris Crutcher and Catherine Gilbert Murdock all write often about teens defined by their sports...HYR picking randomly Chris Crutcher's Athletic Shorts: Six Short Stories, nice because it's short stories...

HNR In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette, but I think I'd really like it ---in July or August. I have a rule that I don't read books set in the cold, when it's cold outside. It just makes it seem colder and lonelier and like rescue and warmth is less likely.HYR Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

I think I read it years ago. Maybe yes, maybe no.

I am certainly acquainted with certain extremely long-lived folks, but they are not acquainted with me. Nor am I of Duncan MacLeod's "Highlander" or Henry Morgan's "Forever" lines.I know the stories of The Canterbury Tales, but if I've read it, it was a very long time ago. So we'll call that a 'no.'
