Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I seriously loathe winter. We're going to hit the 60s tomorrow (basically, I'll get Ashley's weather a day later).

Fun fact: even though I live in Michigan, my company has NEVER closed due to snow. I can work from home, but for the people who can't, it's kind of crazy.

message 352: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I hate winter so much! Usually I'm okay but this year I missed the whole snowboarding season because of a wrist injury. Summer can not come fast enough! Longboarding, here I come!!

message 353: by Sheena (new)

Sheena | 174 comments Trevor I'm so with you!! I want to suntan with a good book and my kids laughter oh and camp!! However, with this snowstorm I bet I still have at least three more months of winter! Ugh

message 354: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments In Finland as long as I have lived (28 years) nothing has ever closed because of winter and snow. Well maybe some problems at the airport and with trains, but everyone always has to go to school and work :)

message 355: by Moth (last edited Jan 29, 2013 10:14AM) (new)

Moth (mothiscozy) I'm trying really hard not to laugh at you guys. I live in Maine. The cold is basically in our blood. We're suppose to possibly reach the 50's later this week, which will be a super heat wave. People will be in shorts for sure. It's been in the twenties at norm and we barely have any snow. It's one of those years for us that its cold instead. Today's pretty comfortable, it snowed last night so it's about in the 30's today and I've been comfortable letting my dog in and our with just a short sleeve shirt on.

It's also been either feels -0 all week or has been. So that could be why too. It gets comfortable when it's been insanely cold.

message 356: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Johanna: There was a snow day yesterday for the local schools even though it was 40 degrees and not snowing...due to fog. It was insane.

Cherise: That's funny. :) I'm from Hawaii (where 75 is "bring a jacket" weather), and I thought California was cold when I first moved there.

message 357: by Moth (new)

Moth (mothiscozy) Kara - Hahaha. I meant my laughing in love in my other post and in this. I love the big differences in people and what they can take, and all being from the same country. I've lived in Maine my whole life, so when we had insane humid weather here this summer, I was completely miserable. I couldn't handle it. xD

message 358: by Sheena (new)

Sheena | 174 comments Cherise I so agree with ya. However, I am having spring fever so bad this year. I usually do okay but knowing I have at least three months left of the snow and cold days just isn't helping!!

message 359: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments I'm in South Florida and we have had maybe two slightly cold days this entire month. It would be nice for a few days to at least go below 70 and leave the windows open.

message 360: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments Iowa is the most volatile climate. haha. Saturday it was 45 and wonderful, Sunday we had freezing rain and it was an ice skating rink. Monday, it rained, thunderstormed and hailed and tonight we will be getting 4-6 inches of snow. We sometimes get thundersnow. I hypothesize humans shouldn't live in Iowa.

message 361: by Ashley (new)

Ashley We were in the 40s Saturday and had freezing rain Sunday morning. Then it has gotten absolutely WARM! Yesterday it was 66 and today it got up to 71. We are currently waiting for strong storms to go through...hopefully we won't lose power here in Southern Illinois. We are right on the edge of the Tornado Watch area.

*Most of our strong storms will come through overnight...which is totally scary. Will have the phone right at my ear until we are clear of these storms!

message 362: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments It´s been around 0 C in Finland for a couple of days now, which is warm for winter! (32F) But I still hate it, the wind makes it a lot colder :( I´d be ready for winter being over any day.

message 363: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments I live a few minutes from Chicago,IL and like many midwest states weather is crazy. Two days ago there was ice rain an 30F and yesterday was cloudy and 62F. Gotta love it!

message 364: by Moth (new)

Moth (mothiscozy) Kelsi - We're about to get that weather here. Just a bit colder. It's freezing rain today, but I also grew up with the Ice Storm of '98. So basically, it's not concerning. I'm more upset that we might be getting a winter thunderstorm. We normally get at least one each year now. It's like 45F today and it'll drop back to teens/20's by the end of the week.

message 365: by Jack (new)

Jack (jack_) I live in Ireland so there's just one type of weather: cold, damp and overcast.

I'm not into football, but my (non-Californian) husband has been a loyal 9ers fan all his life. He is PUMPED...it's their first Superbowl in 18 years (which I learned when he shouted it repeatedly after they won the Championship game).

I am looking forward to watching him watch :-)

message 369: by Ellie (new)

Ellie | 54 comments No, but I'll be watching the Puppy Bowl. :-)

Jack (jack_) Hey, has anyone noticed that they've change the placing of the groups button on goodreads?

message 377: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Hmm...where do you mean, Jack? It looks like it's in the same place in the link banner on top.

message 378: by Jack (new)

Jack (jack_) Was that where it always was. I always had to click explore then go down to community to get to it. It was like that yesterday but changed over today.

message 379: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Are you new to Goodreads? When I started Goodreads I had to go to explore first but after I joined a few groups it changed and it's been at the top since.

message 380: by Jack (new)

Jack (jack_) I've been a member since Jan 8th and I have been in 5 groups ever since. So...?

message 381: by Jack (new)

Jack (jack_) Ah, what does it matter anyway! As long as there's a way to get to the groups section, I'm good! Thanks guys. :-)

message 382: by Ashley (last edited Feb 03, 2013 09:33PM) (new)

Ashley I watched the Superbowl! Was pulling for the Ravens and what a game it was! Best Superbowl I have seen in a while. The commercials weren't bad this year.

My favorites: Jeep (military), Ram (farmer), Clydesdales (they always win in my book...that baby Clydesdale was adorable!!), Space Babies Kia, Goat Doritos, and the Unfolded Laundry...oh and the Tide commerical (that one was for the Raven's fans).

My least favorite: Hands-down that GoDaddy.com commercial. OMG, gross! That's all there is to say about that.

Halftime was lame as usual. Beyonce sang a little bit and danced most of the time. Halo at the end and the Destiny's Child reunion were the best part...still not great though IMO.

message 383: by Sheena (new)

Sheena | 174 comments Wes try to watch the Super Bowl but for us it is a chance to hang out with great friends and tons of food. This year we played in the snow with our snow machines and only watched half time. I didn't think the show was all great this year.

So I have a question/opinion for all of the moms. I am a little OCD about my house being clean so to help with that I try to schedule my cleaning. Like Mondays are dusting, Tuesdays are bathrooms, etc. Lately I have been off on schedule so I get cranky. My husband thinks I am crazy but I think the schedule gives me more time to spend with my kiddos and of course read. Am I the only one that has a cleaning schedule??

I have certain tasks I do on certain days. Laundry = Sundays; Grocery shopping usually Saturdays, etc.

I don't think you are crazy at all. :)

message 385: by Jack (new)

Jack (jack_) You're anything but crazy! Imagine doing the opposite of what you're doing now?! :-D

message 386: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I'm not a Mom yet, but I have days I do things as well.

Mondays - Laundry/Sheet washing
Tuesdays - Bathroom Cleaning
Wednesdays - Vacuuming
Thursday - Mopping/Kitchen Cleaning
Friday - Dusting/Miscellaneous
Saturday - Grocery Shopping
Sunday - Rest Day

Oh yeah!! I just ran a 5K in 39:28!! First time EVER doing a 5K under 40 minutes. I feel like partying!! LOL

Ashley Thanks, Kelsi. The hubby has me doing intervals and everything. He was a track star back when we were in high school, lol. Intervals are killer, but they do help you get faster!

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments To those in New England: stay safe tomorrow! It might be a good opportunity to stay at home with a book.

I'm in Newark, but with any luck, my flight will be fine tomorrow morning, and I'll get back to Michigan as planned.

message 392: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 127 comments Okay guys, I have a bit of a dilemma. I have to choose a text to study for one of my classes, and I have no idea which one to pick. These are my options:
Pride and Prejudice
Wuthering Heights
Atonement
Girl with a Pearl Earring
The Road
A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Poisonwood Bible
The Importance of Being Earnest
Emma
Tess of the D'Urbervilles
Great Expectations
The Great Gatsby
I've read a few of these but I'd love to hear what anyone thinks about any of these books, because I'll never be able to pick one! Thanks :)

message 393: by Julie (new)

Julie | 37 comments I recently read The Poisonwood Bible and really enjoyed it. It is a book that is interesting in how it was written telling the story from different family members. The story sticks with you long after you finish the book. If you have to do research on it it would make for an interesting subject.

I would recommend Tess of the D'Urbervilles. But it might depend if it's a straight lit class. I also would suggest that you NOT pick the Road. Read it some day but not because you have to or on a schedule, it can be very dark and you have to be in the right mood. It also has about 100 words you've never heard of for grey, or dirt, or stone, or grey stony dirt :-)

message 395: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Hmmmm, if I personally had to choose I would narrow it down to three.

1) Wuthering Heights: I read this back in high school and I still remember it! It is in my top 5 favorite books. You get wonderful descriptions of the area, and it is such a tragic and romantic story. Definitely a favorite.

2)Atonement: Not one of my favorite books, but would be one for good research. Topics such a WWII,child not understanding adult actions (which leads to a crime), and romance.

3)The Great Gatsby: This book takes place during the roaring 20s. Total classic and in the top 3 of my favorite books!

Good luck!

I agree with, AJ! Tess is a good one as well, and The Road could be a bit difficult.

message 397: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments I vote Wuthering Heights. Each time I read it I catch something new and it blows my mind every single time!! Dark, dreary, and gothic, but absolutely wonderful.

Pride and Prejudice is witty and wonderful and a super easy read, so if you're looking for an enjoyable, fast read this is the one I would recommend.

My top 4 would be:
1) Pride and Prejudice- it's a very enjoyable/quick read like Kelsi said. Plus, it's one of my favorites so I can't not recommend it!
2) Wuthering Heights- you get the right blend of romance and dark/Gothic themes that keep you hooked throughout the novel.
3) Tess of the d'Ubervilles- even though Hardy is a very difficult writer (his books are very depressing if you haven't read any of his works), he is still a remarkable author. Tess is my favorite novel of his.
4) Great Expectations- I wasn't a fan of this book when I first read it (actually threw the book away), but reading it for class last semester was really fun. Issues of class distinction, social/personal identity, life in England during the Victorian time.

All good novels to choose from though- I can definitely see how picking one would be difficult to do! Good luck!

message 399: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 127 comments Thanks so much, this has helped me heaps! I love Pride and Prejudice, it's definitely one of my favourite books. The Great Gatsby, Wuthering Heights, Tess of the d'Ubervilles and Atonement all sound really good. Thanks again for helping me narrow it down!

message 400: by kisha (new)

kisha I liked the Great Gatsby. That's a good read.
