Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Goodreads Choice Awards winners announced!

http://www.goodreads.com/choiceawards...

Do you agree? Which have you read? Did you add any to your TBR with the announcement?

message 202: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I'm underwhelmed by the results. The only one I agree with is Gone Girl, but then again I haven't read most of the nominations so my opinion isn't well-informed!

message 203: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments Same here Trevor.

Two nominations I put in where winners Gone Girl and Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

message 204: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments I'm quite happy with the winners of Fiction, YA Fiction and YA Sci-Fi+Fantasy, and they're the only ones I've read. I'm sort of annoyed that Fifty Shades has won best Romance though. I haven't read the book but I'm pretty sure it's not actually romance!

message 205: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments I haven't read any of them (hangs her head in shame) but Gone Girl is on my bookshelf and I will be reading it next year.

message 206: by Kai (new)

Kai (uchinaguchi) The Fault in Our Stars was really good. I didn't read anything else in the YA category, but this was really good.

The other books that I have read and didn't win doesn't surprise me. They were good, but they weren't amazing in the way The Fault in Our Stars was.

message 207: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Several of the Winners are on my TBR for 2013, so that is very exciting!

I haven't read any of the winners, so I can't really put my 2 cent in, haha.

message 208: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments The winners I read were Gone Girl (*****), Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (****), and Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir (*****)

I thought they all deserved to win. I already had Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking on my TBR and will probably need to add The Long Earth and The Wind Through the Keyhole.

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Reviewers out there: has an author every commented on one of your reviews? How was the interaction?

This happened to me on Amazon when I gave a guy two stars because his book was littered with grammatical errors. He left an amazingly nice comment on the review thanking me for reading his book, saying my review will make him a better author, and adding that he's from Michigan too. I thought this was AMAZING. All the stories I hear of authors commenting on negative reviews are so bad--I was relieved to be an exception to the rule. I'm curious about what experience others have had.

message 210: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I left a relatively negative review on an author's book on Goodreads (rated it 3 stars but I was being generous, I didn't like it really at all). He PMed me and said thanks for the review and that he's glad I was honest and gave him some feedback. I was impressed by that. That's the only time I've gotten author response on a negative review. A couple times an author has thanked me or commented on my positive reviews though, and that's always nice!

message 211: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I had an author respond to one of my reviews. I rated the book 5 stars, because I loved it. It was totally different from anything I had read in a while. It was a memoir and Non-fiction is really not my thing, and I said that in my review. She PMed me back and was thrilled that she introduced me to something new, and she sent me a personalized bookmark that she made! I won her book in the Giveaways section and she mailed the books herself, so she still had my address. She was waiting to see what everyone said about her book. Everyone got a personalized bookmark!

I have had several authors like my reviews but not respond.

I have a pet peeve about Goodreads. I don't know about any of you, but there are a ton of free e-books you can download from Goodreads. I get all excited when I find one I want to read. I download it and it's in a foreign language...really?? I can't read Arabic or whatever that language is. :( Why not offer different languages of the book?

message 212: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments I am getting really psyched about 2013 reading and all the prep work that is happening in this group. I think it is going to be a great one! Happy Holidays and Happy Reading to one and all!

Ashley Toni wrote: "I am getting really psyched about 2013 reading and all the prep work that is happening in this group. I think it is going to be a great one! Happy Holidays and Happy Reading to one and all!"

I'm excited, too! I went to the used bookstore today and bought some of the books I needed. They were cheap and classics, so why not? Haha, Christmas present to myself!

message 214: by Ashley (new)

Ashley So, I'm reading and the hubby turns on the tv to a little show called Duck Dynasty. Lets just say...I had to quit reading so I could watch. I am now addicted. The Robertson family is hilarious. This is probably the only show in a long time (besides Criminal Minds and Glee) where I will stop reading and watch, haha.

Does anyone else know about Duck Dynasty?? My friends said I was behind, lol.

message 215: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments My husband likes watching that show Duck Dynasty.

Last night we were skimming through the channels and came upon "Amish Mafia" on Discovery. OMG the stupidest show ever! SO lame it made me laugh. The guy who runs this supposed mafia has his office in a barn...Seriously lay of the Godfather movies for awhile.

message 216: by Ashley (new)

Ashley HAHAHA, Nathaly! That sounds hilarious! I think I'll stick with Duck Dynasty though. :)

I feel like I need to say this today. I love this group and it's members so much. We have never met, but I feel like you are my friends, and you are wonderful people to come to, to just get away from reality for a while. Today is a very sad say in the United States. There is so much evil. So much innocence was taken away from this country today as we know of 18 little children (ages 4-10) have lost their lives in a school shooting. At least 9 faculty members have also lost their lives.

Don't take anything for granted. Give your friends and family some extra special love today and always. Love you all and happy reading today.

Well said Ashley...I concur

message 218: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Thank you, Ashley. I completely agree. <3s all around.

message 219: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Quite right Ashely! It is a very sad day all over. We all are united at times like these!

message 220: by Nathaly (last edited Dec 15, 2012 08:27AM) (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments I heard the news from a co-worker and instantly got the goosebumps. I have a 4 year-old son whose preschool class is in an elementary school. I couldn't imagine going through what those parents are going through right now. My heart goes out to them and their families. <3

message 221: by Kara (last edited Dec 16, 2012 04:23PM) (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Wait. I missed something here. What in the world is Duck Dynasty? I'm totally imagining a film crew following around a family of ducks (a la Meerkat Manor) and doing voiceovers for them. Please tell me this is Animal Planet's newest thing.

message 222: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments Is anyone else getting pounded by this storm? Essentially all of Des Moines is snowed in, which means I can curl up and try to meet my reading goal all day! We can't even get out of our driveway, so I'm really thankful I made it back home yesterday. It's looking like a White Christmas after all!

message 223: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments I live 20 minutes from Chicago. Our storm will be starting later this afternoon!

message 224: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Definitely getting the storm here in Michigan, but we won't be seeing snow until tonight. Hopefully it doesn't hurt my flight out tomorrow!

message 225: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments Two of my family members were supposed to fly into des moines today for my birthday, and one is now delayed til christmas eve :(.

My brother is a pilot and has been listening to Chicago's air traffic control and flights are going still, so it has been interesting to learn and listen. They are prepping really well, so hopefully you can all make your flights for the holidays!

message 226: by Sheena (new)

Sheena | 174 comments I am kinda jealous of you all getting the storm. We usually have tons of snow by now in ID. However, we have zero and cold cold temps. I hope the storm makes it this way. I would love to have a white Christmas, especially for my kiddos.

On one thought, I hope everyone travels safe and make it to their destinations!!

message 227: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Bivens | 29 comments I hope weather has simmered down some by Saturday. My husband is flying into Springfield, MO via Chicago on Saturday for Christmas. I know Chicago is notorious for cancelled/delayed flights due to weather.

message 228: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Yeah, I'm so nervous about that. I'm going via O'Hare to Austin, and Carrie's right--O'Hare's awful when the weather's bad. I hope I don't get stuck in Chicago!

message 229: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments On the flip-side, it's in the 80's in Florida. Not terribly Christmassy, but we're making do. Hope everyone gets where they need to go for the holidays safely!

message 230: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments I am home from work - snowed in - been reading and napping all day!

message 231: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Bivens | 29 comments Checked earlier today and flights from O'Hare to Springfield were cancelled. I really hope by Saturday, weather has calmed and things are back on track.

message 232: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments It´s getting colder and colder in here, right now it´s like -10/-15 C (5-14 F). Right now is the limit for me, after this it´s too cold and it will be on the weekend :(

message 233: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments If the world does end today we have 59 minutes left! :P

message 234: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Looks like we're stuck in Chicago. Sigh.

message 235: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments Yeah, both of my family members are stuck in Denver. the Dsm airport is so small and hardly any flights come in, so they are both flying standby to try to get here in time for my bday dinner tonight. Not looking good. On the positive side, you can get reading done.

My road was just plowed this morning...and I live in a suburb of Dsm, by an elementary school. It is so icy and crazy!

message 236: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Magically made it to Austin! I'm so relieved. Hope everyone with holiday travels gets where they need to go!

message 237: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments Yay! How is it over there?

message 238: by Ashley (last edited Dec 22, 2012 08:08AM) (new)

Ashley I hope everyone travels safely this holiday season!! Happy Holidays fellow readers! We are in wind and cold right now in North Carolina but no snow. At least it feels like Christmas!

message 239: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Haha, me too, Erin!

Adriana: it's great so far. We have some friends in town, so they're showing us around. Then tomorrow, we'll Amtrak over to a suburb of Dallas to see my boyfriend's family for Christmas.

I think I love this group the best so far. At least I seem to spend a lot of time in this group compared with many of my other groups.

What's the name of Erin's group? My interest has been piqued.

message 245: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Yay! And we love that you love our group. :)

How's everyone feeling about their 2012 challenges? Four days to go!

I have seven more books to read, so I'm pretty sure I won't make it. On the OTHER hand, I don't need to work for the rest of the year, so there is hope.

message 246: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments I just finished my 2012 challenge today! Yay!

message 247: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I surpassed my reading goals, but apparently I have ADD when it comes to challenges. I have many that aren't completed. That will be my new years resolution!

message 248: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments I surpassed my reading goal of 35 (as of today, I've read 42 books). I'm hoping to finish one more and then I'll have 21 of the 25 I-Spy finished. Not too bad for my first time trying challenges. I'm VERY excited for next year. I have my books pulled from the book shelves in my "library" to the book shelf in my bedroom. I've even thought through a plan of which books I need to read in which months to make my goal. I don't know if that makes me pathetic or just highly organized. LOL!!

message 249: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Okay, I have decided that I'm not making my stated 151, and I am totally cool with that. Sigh. By "am totally cool with," I mean "have begrudgingly accepted."

Finishing six books in three days isn't feasible when there's so much I want to do before the New Year. Oh well. I am, however, still optimistic that I can finish my challenges. I just need to read The Girl Who Ate Kalamazoo (This Is Your Life), The Summer Book (I Spy), and The House of the Spirits (Listopia and Around the World).

(On the other hand, written out like that, it DOES sound pretty daunting.)

message 250: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments I need to read four more to reach my goal of 70. I'm not sure if that is possible but it will be close!
